What type of grease to use with Urethane bushings?
installed a prothane total kit on my civic about an year ago. Do any of you guys know what type of grease is good to keep these guys lubricated? Anyone with this set up? What kind of lubrication worked/didn't worked?
thanks
thanks
When I installed my swaybars, I used the grease that came with the kit...really thick yellowish stuff. Lasted only 4 months. I read up on a few forums and heard about using anti-sieze compound. After using that, haven't had to re-grease in almost 2 years.
Warning though, the stuff is messy.

use marine grease and cut a very shallok circular groove in the inside of the bushing to retain it. other method is to drill a hole through the bracket and bushing clear to the bar and tap the bracket for a grease zerk. fill the zerk with your grease gun. http://www.contour.org has a how-to on this
Silicone grease is what you need. The bushings in question should have come with one (or more) small packets of this grease. You can purchase more of it at any auto parts store. Any petroleum base grease should ne be used with polyurethane! The polyurethane wil react to the petroleum products in a fashion similar to latex! For upkeep on the bushings, and to keep noise to a minimum....spray them about once every (or every 2) week with silicone spray(Honda has this as well).
I just used plain Valvoline bearing grease, and so have several people I know, none of us have had a bit of trouble with it.

bearing grease eventually works its way out of the bushing. then they start squeaking again. drill the bracket and bushing then tap it with a grease zerk and use marine grease. cut retainer grooves circularly in the ID of the bushing to retain the grease. urethane is a type of plastic and will not be degraded by petroleum grease. besides, marine grease is SILICONE based.

Actually I heard about that somewhere and did it on my hatch. I got the smallest zerk fittings I could find. No problems so far after 2 years of abuse including several open track weekends. I have just been using bearing grease but I do find that it leaks out and makes a mess. I also have to re-lube them fairly regularly. Can you get marine grease in standard grease gun cartridges?

you can get silicon bushing grease in a tube........
DO NOT LAUGH at the link..........

Polyurethane bushing grease............$14.00
"This is the good stuff!
Polyurethane bushing manufacturers advise to never use a petroleum based grease for poly bushing lubrication. Polyurethane should only be lubricated with one specific type of grease to insure a long bushing life, and squeak-free performance. Silicone based synthetic water-proof grease, the white sticky stuff!
We've found this grease to be so good, we use it for the entire chassis lubrication on the cars we build and race out of our shop. It stays where you put it, it doesn't wash away.
Don't pay the other guys $9.95 for a little foil pack of this stuff. It's a low volume use grease, and thus most local stores do not carry it. We special order it in large quantities, and can pass the savings on to you, our customers.
From Spohn Performance you get a full-size grease gun cartridge of the good stuff for $14.00."

Thats just what I needed! Me and my bushings thank you!
I was very tempted to put in the order notes, "No this is NOT for a Ford F-body, its for a little rice burning Honda... Nyaaaa" but they probably would have sent me a grease cartridge full of dog turds or something.
