ihi rx6 vs gt35r
I know a lot of guys love the gt35r, but recently on our shop race car we switched to the ihi rx6 turbo and saw around 800 rpms faster spool with no loss on top end...
does anyone else have any experience with this turbo? i'm thinking about using it rather than a gt35r on my 2jz

not my set up(only pic i can find of the ihi rx6) cool though...
this is going to be a single turbo setup on a 2jzge (na supra motor)
shooting for around ~400whp with full boost before 3500rpms and holding power and boost till ~7400rpms

are the compressor houseings the same size between the 35r and the ihi rx6 but just that the ihi rx6 has a super small turbine housing. i never seen the ihi rx6 so i dont know anything about it. im guessing the small houseing helps spool faster

the rx6 is a ball bearing turbo.
APEXi does their housings in cm^2, not a/r... its a more accurate system of meaurement.
i should be running an rx6D on my sr20 if i can pickup this kit im looking at

Its not that the housing is that much smaller in terms of performance...alot of the turbo's we are used to seeing have very large castings. For example a 1.00 ar exhaust housing on a HKS t51r is prolly physically smaller than a .63ar t3 housing, yet will still support 1000whp. The IHI RX6 is a pretty cool turbo (pain in the *** to find parts, etc for it though, atleast stateside) We did a turbo setup on a evo8 that the customer supplied the IHI rx6 from his old Apex'i Kit. The car is blast to drive (2.4L, costworth head, etc) Made well over 400whp on pump

no its about the size of a t25 flange...Its pretty small. The flanges are pretty much impossible to find. We had to have it made.

thats what i thought. alot of the japanese based companies use t2 based flanges.
what was the powerband like. do you know the specific model?
I'm looking at an RX6-D for my 240

Im not sure the specific model...Its whatever was included in the old Apex'i (i believe they are marketed by XS engineering now) kit. the customer had the kit but the manifold kept cracking, he loved the turbo and wanted to utilize it in a kit that didn't suck...

ah. i get ya.

do you build sr20det manifolds?

yeah we are making about 580 whp with the ihi rx6, 800rpms faster spool than the gt35r we had on it before... and no loss of topend power!
I was like 100% sure on the gt35r for my supra but after seeing what the ihi rx6 did on our shop car.... i'm really interested!
(2.3l cosworth built 4G63 block with stock head ports and casting, WORKS 275 cams and valves)
here is the car, time attack winnar!

We did an article on the IHI RX6 turbos a while back.

Its a lot lighter. If you've ever picked one of these things up.. you would be amazed at its weight. also its ball bearing without coolant lines, unlike the 35r.
