I don't know how to check it but your float could be stuck. You can get to the fuel sending unit underneath your rear storage box. I doubt this helps any.

Thats what it sounds like. Normally that is how you test the guage is to ground it out. And if it goes up past the f then It can mess up the fuel guage.

Bump.

This just happened to me yesterday. I have an 89 HF and my fuel gauge was getting close to E. As I pulled into my driveway, I looked down and noticed that the gauge was all the way up to F. It was pass the normal full line, and almost touching the F. I turned off the car, and went inside for a while. When I left again and started the car, it slowly made it's way down to the normal level.

As I was driving, I was almost to my destination (about 25 miles away) and it was pegged at F again. Same thing...turned off the car and was there for about 5 hours. When I left, started the car and the gauge slowly returned to the correct level.

It hasn't happened yet today, it is remaining at the correct level right now. It doesn't appear to effect the driving at all. I'm not too concerned about it, because I use the trip meter anyway to determine when I need to get gas, but it's still a little weird to see the fuel gauge like that.

I may check to see if there are any grounding issues this weekend, but I don't really know where to start.

here's something else to check...

remove the sending unit you'll see a metal cover with 4 tabs. pop off the cover and check the slider that rides along the bobbin coil (copper windings). over time the coil chaffs (sp) the slider and eventually rubs a hole right through it.
