Car starts when it wants to?
Okay this thread is for my brothers 88 CRX d15b2 (if that matters)
He was on his way home a few days ago when after pumping some gas his car wouldn't start. My mom went out and jumped him and it started. Halfway home it died again, she again jumps him and it starts...until she takes the cables off his battery and it dies again.
The next day I go over and pull the battery and take it to O'riellys and have it tested. It tests find and holds a charge. So I take his alternator off and have it tested. It was dead. So I pick up an alternator off a friend of mine (it works came off of a d-b swap) and it tests fine. So I toss it on and the car starts but the battery light is on in his cluster. He turns the car off and it won't start again.
I went to one of our donor cars and pull the battery. Toss it in the rex and the car starts. After letting it idle for about 5 minutes I kill the motor to go home. My brother comes out to start the car and leave and it wouldn't start. A few minutes later it starts again with the battery light on. This went on a few times that night. Sometimes it starts sometimes it doesn't.
What gives? Any input would be great. Thanks.

Maybe I misunderstood, but why did you put in a battery from another car when the one you had tested proved fine? The other point would be that the alternator you got from your friend may be bad as well. When mine went out it went slowly, sometimes working and sometimes not. It could power the car at high rpm's but not enough to charge the battery properly. I'd get that replacement alternator checked out and use the battery that tested fine. Good luck!

Brilliance is knowing your ****, car won’t start when warmed up = main relay. Change the main relay and if it doesn’t fix the problem, I’ll gladly post that I’m a idiot. A search would have netted the same results. Mahalo!

well if you would have read my post you would have noticed that no where in there did I say it wouldn't start if it was warm. It starts warm and cold. Just not everytime you turn the key. Next time read or keep your opinion to yourself.

Because after putting it in and it wouldn't start back up the lights were draingin/dimming very quickly. So I thought it might be the battery. It couldn't hurt because it was just an extra battery that we had laying around.

It's not a crx or even a honda, its a mitsubishi. It's actually being towed off tomorrow. And I thought main relay's went out in the summer when the heat cracks the solder. Never heard of it in the winter.

Are you pulling your hair out because your ECU is throwing a 16 blink "Fuel Injection" code, your idle goes up and down, injectors cut out when you hit the gas and your car won't re-start when its' been off for a few minutes? Where did your power go? Think you've checked everything? Nope, wasn't injectors, starter,ECU,fuel pump,dizzy,fuses,plugs,igniter,battery...this is getting expensive, and nothing works! What the hell is it #@!$$$@%!!!!!?
My friends, it probably is your "Main Relay"! (AKA Main Fuel Relay, PGM-FI Main Relay, Fuel Injector Relay..)
It handles power to both fuel pump and injectors in the starting sequence.

Swap it out and she'll run like new!!! @$40 at O'Reilley, or if you're handy with a soldering iron, fill the gaps around the pins....

Now then, where the hell is the pesky thing anyway?
Above your hood release to the left of the coin box next to the kick panel..
Get a flashlight in your teeth, lay down on the floor upside down and prepare to cuss...
It's an ornery bugger to get to. You must use a socket wrench (the smaller the better...). Remove fuse panel, coin box and hood release to get some room. Yep,its that big thing that says "Mitsuba" on it...
That's it, you can cancel your psychiatrist appointment and crack that Heineken. By God, it starts!!!

Hey TEXREX calm down I already posted that the problem has been fixed due to my own error. The car is running fine and no where did I say anything about a 16blink fuel injection code. That really had nothing to do with my problem other than people saying that it could be the main relay.

Never thought you were an idiot, just was hard headed and knew it wasn't the main relay. But I have sworn up and down that I knew the answer to others problems as well and then in the end I was wrong. Sometimes I just have to remember that I don't get paid to think. Thanks man
