Default New guy - couple of questions

Hello everyone.

I've got an 87 CRX Si that I'm trying to keep in good condition.

I hope you don't mind me starting out with a couple of questions. I've got a fluid leak between the Master Cylinder and the fluid reservoir (where it bolts on). Before I dig into this, I was curious if this is common and if it's repairable by simply replacing a gasket.

Also, the when sitting at a light, the idle will surge every 1-2 seconds, up and down. Any ideas?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I've never owned a 1st gen CRX but I heard from another owner that the engine surging could be caused by an air pocket in the cooling system. There should be a bleeder valve where the radiator hose goes into the top/front of the engine. With the car running open the valve until straigt coolant comes out with no air bubbles. Then top off the radiator.

I don't know if that will help, but it won't hurt anything.

The surging idle could be from the leak in the master cylinder, possibly causing a vacuum leak.

it's probably time to just replace the master cylinder. leaking brake fluid is nothing to expletive with.....

come to think of it i've never disassembled one before

i don't see a gasket between the reservoir & MC....
they're pretty cheap rebuilt

Thanks for the input and the diagram. It looks like #11 would be the failed part. I'll look into replacing the entire thing though (too many small parts to spring out on me).

We got the car on a great deal - $500.00, one owner with all receipts. I offered to buy the wife a newer car (high miles scare me a bit) but she's in love with her "Mighty Mouse". So, it looks like I'll have to learn to work on these.

I'm sure you'll all get annoyed with my millions of questions. I work on my car, but the engine looks very different on the CRX, so I'm afraid I won't be able to contribute much at first, except audio info.

I've been trying to locate a nose clip (?) for the last year. It seems like finding anything for the first gen is a PIA.

Thanks again.

-Cheers

1st gens are rare. But that is all the more reason to have one and take care of it. You might want to keep your eye out for another one for sale. If you can find one with a good body/ interior, but a broken engine/ trans., it might be worth picking up just to have around for parts.
