Default Sterring wheel/rack lowering?

I dislike the position of my steering wheel, i want it lower, its quite annoying as it is now. The million dollar question is how do i achieve lowering the colum. Will it affect anything. Some generous members explained i could use washers. Anyone know what thinkness, size? Any info pertaining to this subject is deeply appreciated.

once you tear all the trim out of the way, the column is held up by 4 bolts (i believe). you could hit up ace hardware for some longer bolts w/same threads, washers to match, and do it ghetto style. your lower plastic trim probably wouldn't fit anymore though....

seems like a lot of hassle
