Default Buying a new tranny

The tranny on my 94 RS crapped out at 159 k today. I can't shift into any gear. I can turn off the car and start it in 1st, but thats it.

So now I'm goin to buy a new tranny. There are a few kids selling their trannys but theyve got 140+ miles on them. I'm worried they've abused them. Is there any way I can tell it without actually swapping it in?

And no, I won't buy a b16 tranny. Why? Because I don't $600.

just had the same problem, its from the cold weather. do you have the omni quick clutch solenoid installed? if you do reach down and pull it up. it seems they dont do so good in cold weather. same exact thing happened and i started freaking out. hope thats what it is though. good luck.

Are you sure its not a clutch master/slave cylinder and not actually the trans? Its unlikely that the tranny blew in all gears like that without some previous notice or it sounding like its about to sent metal shrapnel into your legs.

always look for the easy things first, then start tearing crap apart if it doesnt work. if you can start it in first then try to drive forward. if that works then u know the tranny isnt shot yet. check your clutch fluid level. make sure its clean too.

yeah sounds like you're jumping to conclusions.

I always start with the cheapest problem to fix and work my way up.

if you can't shift into gears its probably your clutch. i just bought an rs with 200xxx miles and can't get it into the gears cause the clutch is gone.

actually i didnt read the whole thing you wrote.... i was just kinda skimming. but as stated above me. it does sound like a clutch problem not a tranny problem...

transmission syncronizers dont go out together... they go out individually... like you can have 1 - 6 bad gears but they more than likely wont go out together.... if they go out together it will be obvious that your tranny is broken cause it will be cracked and falling appart..... but its probably just your clutch.

sorry guys. back now...

The tranny is temperamental, it does shift past 1st, but rarely. I can't seem to find any pattern. The clutch isn't slipping under hard acceleration. The clutch is new, i have receipts from the previous owner. It engages in the same spot as before... I can't believe its the clutch. I talked to some other local HT people and they had similar symptoms. They bought a new tranny and the problem was solved. Are there any 'tests' I could do to find out what it is? Thanks for all the response.

Oh, and the syncros were making some nasty sounds before it totally quit. I would double clutch and JAM the tranny into gear... Coming from 3rd into 2nd was especially hard.

Could be a bad clutch install....it does happen. What if you pump the clutch pedal (20+ times) and try to shift then? Clutch fluid low? Check the fluid, add fluid if needed and then try the pedal pump thing. If the fluid is low then its probably a leaky clutch master cylinder.

ya by what you said about your tranny already having shifting problems before this happend then it could possibly be your tranny then.

but check everything else first.
