Default Heat Not Blowing! ITS COLD! Not Going Where It Supposed To

I bought a 90 Civic dx hatch, basically the heater "works" but doesnt "work"

First off it only works on setting OFF and setting 4, either off or full blast.

Next it sounds like ALL of the air is being released somewhere behind the glovebox, when you move the recirculation or outside air **** across it changes the pitch of the sound of air but still does nothing

If you put it on the windshield, you get a descent ammount of air, enough to heat up the windshield anyways, put it on the center so it all comes out at your face and you get ALMOST NO air coming out, probably couldnt move a piece of paper.
Put it on the floor and NOTHING

Any suggestions?

If you stick your hand behind the glovebox, kinda squish it between the back and whatever is behind it and you can feel a strong breeze.

Need some help on how to get this car HOT

Thanks guys

The weird blower settings is a bad blower motor resistor for sure. When the resistor goes bad it won't alter the voltages to slow the motor.

Try manualy opening the heater in the bay.

I dont think this is his problem^ since heat comes out for the face, get under the pass side and see if the levers move the flaps when you move the slider, if not just manually open them. if its broke I would suggest leaving on the windsheild/feet setting all the time

more than likely the cable attached to the bottom slider needs adjustment or the clip that holds the cable is broken.

the linkage is on the drivers side. move the bottom slider to the left, push the linkage towards the firewall. reinstall cable on the linkage and push it into the clip if it's not broken.

Ive never even been under the dash so i dont know what the "sliders" look like

Do i have to remove my glovebox?

Im gonna tackle this first thing after if possible, If i have to leave it on a certain setting thats cool

But Id like to atleast have it NOT just blow from the floorboards and be able to work on all the heat settings, anyway that can happen?

What if the car had ac and it was removed

Could I be missing a piece? Possibly the piee that would carry the air from the fan box, to the heater box? ANyone have a pic?

yeah there's definitely a tube that runs horizontally across the dash, carrying heat. get behind the glovebox you should see where it's supposed to be

you said you put your hand under the dash and feel the air right? so look under there something might have disconnected and put it back together. take a look you fix it its fairly simple

Yeah, if A/C was removed, then the evaporator which is behind the glovebox has probably been taken out. When I took out my A/C, I just reused the evaporator box and taped up all the wholes from the evaporater I took out. You can also use a vent tube from a non-A/C car.

You also said when you stick your hand behind the glovebox, you feel a strong breeze. You are feeling the air coming directly out of the blower motor which is by the passenger door. Inbetween that is the vent tube which attaches to the heater core, which is what diverts all your air. This expalins why you're not getting any air from the front vents.

#29 is the non-A/C vent box that you might be missing. Only way to know is get on your back and look.

I see a lot of your posts man, and you seem to know what's wrong or have an idea, but never get in there and figure it out. Just take off the damn glovebox it's 2 screws and look.

I can totally understand that. Really no other part that I can think of that you can substitute in there. Realistically though, all you need is something that can fit over the end of the heater core and the blower motor.

Anything from faulty wiring to a bad switch.

Well I popped the glove box off and went at it

First off, there was a nice 2X3" hole that was open, that was were most of the air was coming out of, it was were the right side of the glove box would be, pointing right at it, had 2 screw holes on each side of the hole, assuming something was once there.... i coverred it in duct tape

There was also a good bit of air leaking from the "joints" on the massive tube that spans from the blower motor to the center of the car, on both sides, so I duct taped those connections

I still have ZERO control of where the air comes out of, no matter what, there seems to be a good ammount of air going to the windshield and window side heaters

If there is a way to permantently set it to one point then so be it. But Id love to have this working

Thanks

I fiddled and cleaned a lot of stuff, taped up all the connections so tehre wasnt any loss of air and I somehow manged to get 2 setting to work

When its on the windshield setting, i get a strong windshield blow, no breeze from anywhere else

And when its on the face setting (furthest left) it comes out about 60% feet, 40% windshield

I also figured out that the big piece thats missing, the 2x3 hole I was talking about is supposed to be some sort of "resisitor box" and screws on and a harness that I found tucked away plugs into it and I will get my heat settings back

I think im happy with how Ive got it working

Would be nice to be able to have it come out of the center vents though, dont know why it doesnt

That would be your blower motor resistor. They're like $25 from majestic honda, it'll take you all of 2 minutes to put in.

For the directionality issue, it sounds like the cable that controls the mix setting is getting snagged on something. Since you only have two mixes (Defrost, Defrost/Floor Mix, which are the rightmost two) I bet this is the problem. Look at the back of your climate control unit, you should see the cables coming out the back of it. Move the mix switch back and forth and see if the cable moves the selector it's attached to properly or if it's getting caught. You should remove the radio console and possibly the bracket for easiest access if time allows.

Problems basically solved

I grabbed the reistor box out of a crashed civic at the yard, all heat seeting 1-4 and off work perfect

And I climbed under the drivers floorboard and noticed that the cable is just not secured, if you hold it snug against the side it can push and pull the lever no problem, but as it is now, it does nothing

Just gonna fab a bracket or drill a hole for a ziptie and that will be taken care of
