turbo d... too fast?
hey guys im new to honda tech but not to cars in general but anyways
i picked up a 97 ek coupe as a daily a few months back and so i thought it would be fun to boost my daily. the car is a 97 dx so its the non v-tec d16y7. so i boosted it and i find myself killing unusual cars that i wasnt expecting to beat.
here's my setup i just find it very wierd that my d series seems so much faster than others.
hf manifold with adapter plate
ihi rbh5 turbo
mkIII supra fmic with jank piping
mkIII BOV
vortech fmu retrofitted to 10:1
map bypass
and im still obd2
boosting about 10lbs
im running screen over my intake
and open downpipe for now
but i have been killing gsr's
b16 hatchs
a turbo mini me crx
turbo pt cruiser haha
and my friend says its alot faster than his itr with bolt ons
i just dont get it everyone hates one turbo d's but i just dont understand why mine seems so much faster, it's especially wierd since im untuned running an fmu for management. any input on this?

Yeah, your motor is going to blow up in a week running an FMU and 10psi.

I'd be really really nervous at 10psi on an FMU. I would bet money that you are leaning out hardcore up top.
I've seen FMUed cars running 7psi lean out dangerously in the upper RPMs, at 10 psi you are really pushing it.
Give your motor some fuel, it will thank you.
Oh, and yeah, turbo d's surprise a lot of folks. IMO you really can't beat the fun factor for the price and ease of a turbo d

stock GSR's and b16's are slow...
and even type R's with bolt ons...
a turbo D should walk all over those... if you ARENT, then id be worried...
and as for an SRT-4.. they come with like 230whp stock.... I know ive seen some dynoed right off the lot and made that....
get that thing on the dyno, or at least a wideband to see how your fuel actually is...
like they said, dont risk it..

yea i agree with the fuel issue, but if you guys know
the ihi rbh5 then you know this turbo is the size of someones fist. i wasnt planning on running 10 psi, the wastegates not working right and i need a new one. and as for fuel i have a narrowband and as we all know narrowbands arent the most accurate things, but when im boosting it runs mega rich. 10lbs on my turbo is like 5 on a 57 trim.

yea that does make sense about putting it together right, because ive seen so many messed up diy kits that people had no idea of what they were doing. i definetely did my reasearch. oh yea i also forgot to mention it also has a wahlbro 255. and the turbo is also watercooled

There is no such thing as running mega rich according to a narrowband. The richest that thing knows and shows you is 14:1, which is damn lean for a street driven turbo setup. So don't think because your airfuel gauge is pegged rich that means you are.
I know a guy locally who ran 14lbs on an FMU....it lasted for 4 months surprisingly. It ended up blowing when he got it up the "Summit" which is like 3 miles up a 7 percent grade. 4th gear, full throttle, uphill, alot of load....booom.
The D15 I just turbo'd for a guy beat a 2003 Cobra driven by a high school kid. Descent driver he might have lost, but they raced from 1st gear roll...by 4th gear he had the Cobra by 3 cars. 390hp weighs what 38-3900 lbs versus mildly gutted coupe 2000-2200 lb with 200-220hp at the flywheel...it's a race.
Don't underestimate the turbo Dseries versus a tank ***'d SRT4. That, and get yourself tuned via wideband to keep it safe.
