Default Buying a crx.

*First post*

Ok, so I'm looking to buy a crx off of my friend. He bought for a G and it wasn't starting. But it just needed a starter and battery. Now, hes getting rid of it because hes having another kid and needs a 4 door. Everything about the car is solid except for one thing. The struts. I did some research on the internet, and got really confused. Its an 89 SI and I don't know if it uses struts or shocks. I'm looking to buy new ones to slap on her, but I don't know what to even look for. I was looking around at different options but I didnt find struts anywhere. I mostly found shocks.

The condition that teh car is having is you go over a bump or potwhole and you get rocked hard and there is a loud bang. The car is lowered already. I'm not looking to get OEM spec parts, I might as well buy upgraded parts. So what the hell do I need to buy???

I heard good things about kyb and tokico but I didn't find any struts. Only shocks. Now, to my knowledge, shock absorbers are inside the strut...or am I wrong. Please help. I'm really excited about getting it, and I want to be on the road with it asap. Thanks.

"'Shock absorbers' are physically separated from the car's springs. A 'strut,' on the other hand, is a shock absorber with a spring that fits around it"

IE the CRX has got struts + springs, and you outta probably replace both. Look into Konis or Illuminas. Eibach makes good springs, but I'd stay away from the KYB personally.

Hope that helps!

For a really comfy, slightly lowered look, get the Eibach Pro Kit, and stock honda strut and shock replacements. fr and rr

Very inexpensive for the ride quality you get

Have the springs been cut ?
There was a guy here local that had a Hf with cut springs and that thing looked like a super ball bouncing down the road.

I agree , I'd swap out the springs as well as the struts.
I cant flame KYB , I had a set on my Si with Progressive Sport Springs and it handled very well. Not as good as some other setups but for the money spent I was happy.

Well, the area I live in is littered with pot holes no matter where you go...except the military bases...but from what i know, the springs aren't cut. The car sits way lowered than what it should tho. So stay away from KYB? I think I'm just gonna get a stock replacement for now and save up for koni struts and eibach springs. The guy I'm buying it from says he'll put the parts in for free. So I'm good. Really appreciate the help.

If anyone is wondering. Its a 1989 sohc vtec. Upgraded clutch and flywheel, headers, custom downpipe, and Aem cam gears.

what springs does it have now? coilovers? If you put really hard springs on stock struts, your struts will wear out very fast.

Yeah, I researched that as well. I found a deal on a tokico struts. 395 for a set of four? Comes with springs. Tokico any good?

yeah, that tokico strut/spring package is alright... it doesn't drop the car very much and isn't very aggressive as far as handling goes... just a mild sporty setup. Compared to what is on there now, it will feel awesome.

I'd say replace both as well. It sounds like the struts are maxing out when you go over a bump or whatever. Which means that when you go over a bump or whatever the strut should compress, but as it compresses it should get harder and harder to compress. What you have is probably a leak or something because it sounds like your strut has nothing in it to compress so it just slams into the bottom/top with no resistance. Try push down pretty hard on the fender or even the bumper and see what happens. If the car just comes back up with maybe a little sway/bounce after you let go then thats normal. But if it keeps rocking or bouncing up and down then your **** is messed up.
