i got this block for free. i swapped a gsr in a integra after the kid who had it, blew the motor with a HMT he pieced together. kid blew it up in three days with his turbo kit on. after i remove the oil pan, i see the JB weld fitting he used leaked most of the oil out so i am stuck with this block.

I want to use it for an LS-Vtec i am putting together. What do you make of these pictures? Maybe you can spot something that my untrained eye can't.

is the crank salvagable? what about rods? the journals on the crank are still smooth, it won't catch my fingernail if i go along it.

Send it to a machine shop and they will take care of it

thanks my major concern is if would be okay just to micropolish the crank. anybody else see a problem about using this block for an LSV?

A competant machine shop should be able to answer all your questions. When dealing with parts inspection, i find it really hard to deem something "ok" that i cannot physically touch. Just have them check the crankshaft for runout, and any obvious knicks on the journal sufraces, and have them mic the journals as well to see if they are still within spec.

As far as the block is concerned, if your planning to stay 81mm, have them mic each bore, to make sure theyre round, and if theyll clean up with a hone without taking away too much material to run a decent piston to wall clearance.

With the rods, make sure there arent any sharp edges or knicks anywhere along the rod, whether theyre from manufacturing, poor disassembly or handling or whatever. The inside of the big end of the rod, that the bearings sit in, doesnt ride on anything, so the surface finish really isnt all too important.

whats the reasoning behind that?

A ding or deep scratch in a rod drastically reduces its fatigue strength.

The parts in those pictures look usable.

i see...
well what are you suppossed to do if there are scratches or knicks?
wouldnt machining the rod make it even weaker?
