i have a 91 dx that has been converted to multipoint and has a fully built d16a6 bottom end with a z6 head that is turbo. i have had a charging problem with this car and i think it may have something to do with the wiring for the alternator. i have replaced the alternator several time and it will work for a while but then they quit charging. then two days ago had my keys in the on position with the car not running and i noticed the alternator smoking. also if i take the power wire directly from the alternator and disconnect it from the terminal on the under hood fuse box it will spark like it has an amp draw or drawing current. does anyone have any idea what could be causing this. does anyone know how to check the plug wiring going to the alternator? i hope this is enough information to help. thanks adam

i would check the wires inside the loom coming off the alternator. ,,maybe theres a frayed wire somewhere or some kind of rig job in there from a previous owner.
agreed
it must be in that line
if it was in the system after the fuseboxes
it should blow a fuse instead of smoking the alt(which you have/will replace I am sure)
make sure someone didn't put the wrong size fuse anywhere also
