2nd tranny failure in 3 months?
Hello,
I recently bought a 1996 Accord automatic and it looks like i got screwed. Shortly after I got it, check engine came on with P0740 - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit failure. I was told that this may just be a fluke, cleared the code, and about 5k miles later the transmission dies on the highway (winding noise from the engine and doesn't come out of first). A rebuild would cost about as much as the car so I get a used transmission put in (parts & labor a little over a grand) and now, about 3 months later, the same code comes back. Now, I've got a 1 year warranty on the transmission repairs so should I go to the shop and see if they can find the problem (the first time I took it to a tranny specialist and they said it was working fine) or just run it till it dies again and hope that the next one they put in will work?

Yeah, I'm definitely going to get it checked out with them, but just as in the first time this happened, I'm sure that they'll basically charge me $70 to drive my car and say that it "feels" fine. So I think my actual questions should have been: given that the mechanic does nothing, is there anything I can really do now to avoid another transmission failure? Does the fact that the error popped up again mean its not an issue with the transmission? Is this something that will get resolved if a new transmission is put in?
