I don't go for any of that IM ****... I can barely tolerate the ones I get from the forums. Don't see the need to encourage that kind of thing.
I use email. Seems immediate enough for my typing and spelling skills.

I agree with Thawley. I use E-mail instead of AIM, ICQ, etc.

Those are actually abbreviations, not acronyms. In order for an abbreviation to be an acronym, it needs to be pronounceable.
Keith, who likes to bring up his pet peeves...
Edit - improved spelling of "peeves"

hmmm,my "learn something new every day" goal has been satisfied for today.
i always thought an abbreviation is the shortening of one word.for example, "tomm" for tomorrow,or.......now i can't think of any commonly used examples...you get the point though,i hope.
i thought an acronym is shortening a phrase by using the first letter of each word.NASA,NASCAR,LOL all being examples.if it has to be pronounceable, are ROTFL or SCCA not an acronym?
am i wrong?
what if an acronym contains an acronym, such as AIM?!!whoa,my mind is blown.......

There are multiple ways of abbreviating, not just shortening a word. An acronym is just one type of abbreviation.
LOL wouldn't be an acronym, unless you pronounce it like "loll". Spelling it out when you say it doesn't count. Same for ROTFL, SCCA, and AOL.
AIM could be an acronym, but I don't hear it being said the same as the word "aim".
Keith, who thinks "chad" would be an abbreviation...

Google reports that this is a VERY common misunderstanding.
Some sources report your definition of acronym, some report the more widely-used (IMO) definition that doesn't carry the requirement of being pronouncable.
Most report IEEE, IBM as acronyms. Some definitions clearly state that PTA (parent-teacher association) is NOT an acronym, but possibly an initialism and surely an abbreviation.
IBM, XHTML are acronyms: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acronym (Sadly, an interesting read.. that "fish" representation of christ is actually from an acronym!)
PTA is not an acronym: http://www.state.tn.us/educati...y.htm
Fortunately, it seems that everyone has a definition that they can use for their own purpose.

goddammit, im confused.
everyone i know pronounces aim as "aim" (like aim your rifle) not "A" "I" "M"
is saying the letters phoneticly what makes them an acronym? like PETA or MADD, or are you saying that NOT sounding them out to form a new word is what makes them an acronym such as FBI of CIA?

That's funny, because everyone I know sounds them out A-I-M. On the other hand, I pronounce ROFL as "roffle".

This "Internet" thing is gonna be huge! Listen to what Senator Ted Stevens said this year:
Senator Ted Stevens:
"I just the other day got... an Internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday, I got it yesterday. Why? [...] They want to deliver vast amounts of information over the Internet. And again, the Internet is not something you just dump something on. It's not a big truck. It's a series of tubes. And if you don't understand those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and it's going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material"
Ah, Friday.

you know I hated it when people would say WTC instead of World Trade Center. It's faster to type WTC, but to say double-you-tee-cee is lame.
AIM is pronounced "aim"
LOL is pronounced "loll"
SQL is pronounced "sequel" or "es-que-ell" depending on who you ask
STFU is pronounced "S-T-F-U" as in "Did you go to STFU?" (polite/covert way of telling someone to shut the f*ck up)
I see Frank everywhere. Why are people so concerned about it?
