Default been changing oil for years.. but this time oil dipstick questoin is fckin botherin me..

first off, ive been doing oil changes for 10$ an hour for almost a year fulltime while going to school fulltime, never had any problems with oil. Been turbo swapped in my recent motor for almost a year now, but im having some wierd *** issues with regards to readin the oil level.. i bet this is like the 5th time ive gone and jacked up my car and drained some oil out ever since i did oil change about 5 days ago. I put about 4.5-4.7 Qts of oil into my JDM b18LS motor thats' FI Turbo. Reason i put so much extra b/c i was in a rush and used the 5 quart bottle they sell at wallmart and ddnt measure. but i drained some out, cranked engine, checked it and it looked low again, then added some more. then next day it reads high, then i drain some out, etc..

So ive searched and theres alot of methods by which ppl check their oil.. in the morning (when oil is all settled down but condensed b/c its not heated) .. 45 mins after a drive (oil is expanded due to heat and might read more then when checked in the morning) and etc..

Well i keep checking my oil and dunt know if im too much over dont want to foul up plugs or do dmg to rings.. so question is : when i check my oil over night ie in the morning b4 school, it reads right at 2nd dot. but when after a drive and 30-45 mins later i check oil, its about 1/4 cm above 2nd dot.. am i ok leaving it as it is or do i have to drain some more oil AGAIN/ and yes i wipe dipstick off and etc.

HOW IVE always been doing oil changes and checkin oil for past years is pour the rec ammount but about 1/2 lower then usual crank it and leave it on for 3 secs for oil to circulate and then turn off and check it and add appropriately needed. but for some reason im gettin all kinda of mixed readings from dipstick & im pretty **** about my oil level cause i dont want any issues /w my motor / turbo.

The proper way of checking oil level is after it sat for a while. Like first thing in the morning before starting, check the dipstick level. Whatever it reads at that time is the level you go by. That way the oil is settled down to the sump, just make sure the car is level.
If you overfill your oil, rear main bearing seals might rupture causing a leak. Oil will get onto your flywheel and surface of your clutch. Also, you could end up with bearing damage after a while.

yeah thats what im going by, but after reading alot on HT baout oil. some ppl are saying that isnt a good way to check because #1 im FI and my oil needs to be runnin through head, turbo, lines, etc, while having enough oil down there splashin around to be lubracting the bearings and crank etc right also so oil iflter wont become dry? so someppl said checking it after a 45 min after a normal drive would be ideal because the oil expanded 45 mins t let some oil drip down to pan and to have it at a good opt temp etc and thats how ur suppose to read it? im fckin confused as hell how to correctly read it so i dont have to worry about having TOO much or too less oil..

also ur description of having too much oil.. in ur case that would be like 1/2 quart - quart TOO much right? as for my setup. im probably about 1/4 quart Over at the MAX? that wouldnt cause taht damage right?

**EDIT 12/11/06 9:04 PM**
I cant post more then 5 post per day so icant reply to wht ppl are saying But, how come my readings are different when it sits over night versus when i check 45 mins after a 15 min drive? So accordding to everybody on here, my oil level is fine because when i check it over night its right at 2nd dot, only when driving for 15 mins and then checking about 30-45 mins after it reads above 2nd dot .

Engine oil does not expand like transmission fluid does when heated.

Just check it in the morning on a FLAT level surface.

what does it matter as long as its within the range?

If its too high then the crank can hit it causing extra windage (drag) and it then gets slug up on the cylinder walls. However, on the low side of things, as long as the oil pickup is submerged, you're golden (which means you have to have about a quart of oil in there).

Does it read higher on the second check? Meaning you wipe the stick clean and then check it again? I think you're worrying about a 1/10" too much, put it bewteen the lines and rock out.
