Default Mazda rotary engine

OK. I was looking really hard at a friends RX7 the other day, and after taking it for a sort spin, I thought to myself..."I'm really liking this car..." This may sound crazy or stupid to many of you but, have any of you seen or heard about a rotary engine swap in a eg civic? Yes, with rear wheel conversion and all? I have seen an old Nissan Sentra with this swap, on the drag strip, it runs like a beast.

They are torqueless and the apexi seals on them go out too fast, so all I can say is have fun changing out those rotary engines for a new one every couple thousand miles or kilometers.

Not very common thats for sure it gonna take a shitload of fab work. I have seen an rx-7 motor in a mustang that was pretty quick. what year rx-7 did you drive or more importantly what motor do you want to use? (I know they are all 1.3b's unless its 1984 or earlier.) Are you thinking of droping a turbo one in?

Torqueless?? What are you talking about ? I may not be an expert on rotarys but there are diffenetly not torqueless! The Apexi seals IS an issue, but the engine can put out some serious HP. Don't say that to a rotary guy....

The car I drove was a 1995 RX 7 third generation, turbo. Stock except for a larger front mount intercooler. Not sure what engine exactly.

Hey, I love my honda, and B series engines, and I respect all views and opinions on this thread, but I must ask...Why is a rotary in an EG hatch=worst idea ever? Lets face it power to weight is great, 9-10 RPM, capably of producing serious HP, sounds great too, and will have a rear wheel drive Civic. Still not good??.....

RX-7= No low end, but extreme high end

My buddy has one and my cousins ITR swapped CRX crushed him from any stop but at a roll was walked by the rotary. I know I'm comparing apples to oranges but those thing got nothing when it comes to the low end.

I will see if I can find the video--in Australia they are huge on rotaries. Its a video of an old Mazda 323--car is around 89,90 sort of looks like an EF--it had a 9" for or 12 bolt chevy rear end--in the front-driving the front wheels--they chopped up the axle and put kingpins on the end--there was a peripheral or bridge port 13b--about 2-3 feet in front of the front wheels--with a short driveshaft heading back from the motor--ITBs--pretty ridiculous setup. Rotaries are awesome!! I would love to build a stripped out FD--get it down to like 2100 lbs, ditch the turbo setup and put either a dowdraft 51 IDA Weber or ITBs on a peripheral port 13b--nothing sounds like a rotary.

All you dweebs talking about "apexi seals" dont know your heads from your asses when it comes to FD's

First off......its APEX seals,

second....my 79 rx7 had 300,154 when it finally needed to be swapped out.
Learn how to take care of one, and the sky is the limit, just like any other car.

They are a seriously fun race engine too, if you know what you are doing.
Its great to see a turbo 13b in a 76 super beetle run 9's

1) It sounds like a weed eater. I too like rotaries, but they all sound like a motorcycle crossed with a weed eater.
2) How is that a sedan? American definition of sedan is 4 doors. European original definition is a functional B pillar. An RX-7 is neither, it has 2 doors and only A and C pillars.

I have yet to hear anyone say the same thing about 13B-REW's, my *** is always on RX7club.com. Crap people who hit 100k miles in their turbo rotary act like they just won the Nobel peace prize.

There are a good number of NA 12a's and 13b's hitting 100k but definitely not 13b-REW's.

To the OP, you'll spend less just buying an RX-7 and it will handle better. Rotaries are not for the weak of heart.

rotary in a civic=gay... buy a starlet or something to that nature. However, read up in some ooooold as Turbo Magazine articles, there was a tube chassis CRX with a rotary at the Pan Am nationals years ago(late 90's) with some nasty rotary.

We have two rotaries here in Australia running in the high 6-second zone, with a large number in the 8 and 9 second zones. N/A versions is 20B and 13B form are running between 10 and high-12 second 1/4's. My own very very basic 12A RX7 with nothing more than $1700Aus of extend porting, exhaust and carb rejetting netted a 14.0 on genuine street tyres. It made 27mpg on a run, 24mpg around town and 18-20mpg when at work. It produced around 215hp atf. Can't remember trap speed....it was back in mid-90's.

As for reliability comments....own one first and then comment. Mine was ported at 180,000km - it was like new inside. Reliability issues with the seals was taken care of back in the mid-70's. There's also aftermarket support in terms of seals, these days, for those looking for high power numbers.
