Default hondata question

hey there...

i have a very sad story..

i have a friend that has a 98 integra gsr and plans on selling it because it doesn't run the way it should.

there is reasoning behind this and yet i believe he is fed up with it.

but... this is because he slaps on engine parts and expects it to run perfect, yet that is what we would all wish of course.

he has:
pro-1 header
tanabe super medalian cat back exhaust
aem high flow fuel rail
skunk 2 pro series intake manifold
skunk 2 pro series throttle body
b&m fuel pressure regulator
k&n CAI
nology grounded spark plug wire kit
skunk 2 adjustable cam gears

his car runs but bogs sometimes and sometimes won't even start, but that is very rare. he has lost a little bit of power, but thats because the engine isn't properly tuned to work with the parts he has on his car, and i was suggested an obd1 ecu, hondata wiring harness and the hondata chip(which he already has) and then some good ol` tuning on the dyno which is provided approx. 19 miles from where i'm at.

he doesn't believe this will help, and he was told by the tuner that other ecu components might be needed and that sort of turned him off. Is this true?

ideas and comments are welcomed.

thx

Those list of bolt on's are really basic, none of those things should cause the car to bog out or not start.

The first thing that comes to mind is; is the check engine light on? If so, what error codes is it throwing?

Secondly, does he do the regularly maintain his car? Whenever a car bogs, I alwasy do the basic stuff: oil change, new air filter, new fuel filter, dist. cap & rotor, spark plugs & wires. It's amazing how much a difference simple things like this can make.

As for the not starting, it could be the ignitor inside his distributor cap starting to take a dump.

sounds like a good place to start.

he's not so much of a maintenance guy, lol.

he better learn to be.

maintenance always comes before toys in my book

thx for a great starting point. we shall check it all out.

if there are any other ideas or if there is anyone out that that has come across a similar problem or knows someone that has, it would be greatly appreciated.

- Is he sure the cam gears were installed correctly....in terms of the timing belt and such?
- He should really get rid of those nology wires, they are known for 1.)not lastly and 2.) just not being good.
- Agreed, what's the fuel pressure at?
- What spark plugs? Has he replaced them?
- Agreed, check the distributor rotor and replace if needed.

If the car is bogging while hes driving it could be because hes running rich as f#$% and needs to get it dyno tuned asap if he has the hondata..

I had a similar bog/hesitation problem with my gsr swap, it turned out be the b & m fpr. it seems to be very touchy . had to set it to 38 ps1 max/ with 255 fuel pump. plus i have a hondata system which does nothing to remedy this but a compromise.
check the fuel pressure

i think the b&m fpr may just be junk, anyone else have problems?

get a fuel pressure gauge, so u can read the stock psi and adjust from the starting point... if the pressure is to low, u will not run rite w/o fuel pressure...
