Default New Car possibly in safe mode

I just bought a 91 ef sedan that has a d16z6 swap with a pm6 ecu. I was driving it the other day and when i shifted into third gear it lost all power until it went to 2k rpms and then it would sputter . I shifted to 2nd and 1st and both gears did the same thing. I had my parents come pick it up off the side off the road bc i had to go to work but they started it up and it drove fine for them. The guy i bought it from said it never happened to him and it hasn't done it for me again. My friend said it might have something to do with the dizzy or something might have thrown it into safe mode is what i was thinking. I don't think its throwing a code either. Ne help would b greatly appreciated.

its called limp mode....the major indicator of limp would be a rev limit of about 3400 revs. if your not experiencing this when the sputtering occurs, its prolly not in limp mode. Make sure your positive youre not throwing any codes then go from there...ive dealt with many-a sputtering diag on my motor...check plugs, wires, cap and rotor...check your main relay joints, if the guy did the mpfi swap check the wiring!! all of it! make sure the solder joints are good...i had a major misfire problem it turned out to be BAD solder joints. be sure to double check the codes because that can be quite helpful.

a d16Z6 with a pm6 ecu??? u sure? the proper ecu for a z6 is a p28 or you would have to chip a pm6 and run some type of vtec controller. I'm guessing you have an obd0 dizzy? get the right engine with the right ecu or chip the one you have or it will run like crap because the fuel and ignition maps won't match the motor

I did find that it is throwing 2 codes but the blinks are so close together i cant tell which are the longs and which are the shorts. So here they are first is 8 then 16 and 7 then 14. Now i dont know if this is the right order for this but if you can decipher this more power to you. And it is a chipped pm6 but i'm sure its not running a vtec controller. The guy said that it was just the ecu that kicked it in. Thanks again

P.S. it will sound like it is kicking OUT of vtec and then i will pull it off the road and it starts right up and doesn't do it unless i really get on it.

if its a pm6 ecu there are no long or short blinks just count each blink and after the pause its a new code. im not to sure but i didnt know you can run vtech with a pm6 ecu.

You can't, well, not properly at least.

There is no OBD0 single cam VTEC ECU, so you either have to get the appropriate ECU and convert to OBD1 or run a ghetto RPM switch.

the RPM switch can't add extra fuel during VTEC, so it doesn't even help you anyway.
