Manual rack conversion problems
who has this done?? my problem is during cornering, esp on offramp sweepers, ill hit a bump midway and the steering wheel will jerk back and forth for a sec so i have to hold it really hard. ive tried everything with the rack guide and even disassembled the rack again to be sure everything was in there. also i found that with both wheels jacked up, there is side to side play which feels like a bad tie rod end...but you can feel that play in both wheels which means there is play inside the rack.
is this normal or no? i dont like it. you guys think i should try putting in a junkyard pinion? im about to reinstall p/s so if anyone has an uncut high pressure line from the pump to rack, ill buy it. also interested in the other 3 hard lines coming from the rack on a 4g. thx

I've heard about this on another thread. They seemed to die out so I'm thinking they got it fixed.
I think what may be going on is when there is pressurized fluid in the rack it tightens everything up. I don't really know. How much play? have you measured it?
Measure, and I'll jack my car up and check what it has.

you need to tighten up the rack guide adjustment.

put it up on jack stands with the front wheels on, and grab the "rag joint" coming from the steering wheel to the rack. shake the wheel and feel the play in the joint.
loosen up the large outer lockring and tighten up the smaller center nut one about a 1/4 turn. tighten the lockring and do the same shakedown test. tighten it up until you dont feel any play
