Losing Compression and burning alot of oil
I have been checking my h22a4 regualrly and it seems to eat up around a qrt of oil a week. I DD it right now only about 15 miles a day though. I usually shift between 3-4k. I hit vtec maybe 3 or 4 times during the week. So im not killing the motor, i drive quick but dont rev the **** out of it. My compression numbers were low but all similar 150 across. SO i guess that rules out HG. There is no oil in my coolant btw. I notice small oil residue on the underside of the motor but nothing is leaking to the point where it ever leaves an oil spot. I was thinking piston rings and valve stem seals could be the culprit. Is there anything else that can cause loss of compression ?
At idle its just a regular grayish exhaust and in vtec ive been told its black as hell. They said its not bluish.
Black is normal as the car is running rich in VTEC.
Your compression, if even is not too bad, as everything is consistent between all cylinders. The numbers can vary from tester to climate and temperature. But if you're losing a qt a week, that is pretty excessive.
Try doing a leak down test to see the percent leakdown.

5qt+ every week. holy crap man. that's one thirsty mother******! yeah get a leakdown test done. the cylinders should be within 10psi with each other. they shouldn't be lower than 160-170.. if it is.. you've got more problems than you think.
no i said $5 a week for a quart of mobile 1. Because im burning like a quart a week.
When you say more problems what else could it be besides rings and valve seals ?

bad valve seals will make blue smoke mostly at startup, since oil leaks down while the car is sitting. doing a leakdown test will only tell you how much compression the solid rings leak...bad oil control rings between the solid rings will cause oil burning, but a leakdown test wont tell you if theyre bad
how many miles on the motor?? try switching oils...my old motor burned mobil 1 like yours, switched to conventional castrol hi mileage and it burned about half as much

So whats causing the burning then if you believe its not the rings or seals. Its lossing alot more now than 20k ago, whether its burning or leaking. Its an h22a4 with 126k.

personally i dont like mobil 1 syn. im running it right now. your going through syn. oil because thats a pretty high mileage motor for syn. im gonna run Quaker syn (sp?) next oil change

you tried taking the oil filler cap off while the engine is running? if your rings are shot then you may experience higher than usual crankcase pressure, hold your hand over the filler hole and feel for a breeze, there should be some but if it blowing hard then there may be a problem. dont rev it when you've got your hand over it cause oil will come out and mess your hands up

dont run 15W 30, thats too thick.

Hi,
I just bought a '91 prelude si, with 178k.
I was wondering, it seems to hit 3000 rpm at 12mph in 1st gear, 25mph # 3000 in second, 38mph @ 3000rpm in 3rd, 52 mph @3000rpm in 4th and 65mph at 3000rpm in 5th. Is it me or does this seem a little low? I noticed with my 91 CRX i just got rid of that it was about 15mph @ 3000 rpm in 1st and an additional 15mph more in each additional gear, and that was just with a little 1.5 engine.
Is this normal for the prelude? I did have it up to 80mph in 5th gear, and the cars power seems okay, but that was around 4000 rpm. Has the car lost a good amount of compression and power over time, or would you think this is normal?
Thanks.

dude wtf, is HT now the new retard posting board, springtime is when all the tards and ricers come out of hibernation..how does this relate to this threads question...LEARN TO DRIVE STICKSHIFT ON THE ROAD NOT ON THE NET!
and the reason your driving at 4000 rpm is because of the gearing, and whatever tires your running it has nothing to do with the engine, the only way it would is if your clutch is slipping now get lost.
