Per 2007 GCR:
15.17.9 Head Restraint – Side Impact
As of July 1st, 2007 it is required that all drivers employ a right-side impact head restraint system. A seat with a “bolster” to keep the head from moving to the right side in an impact is acceptable. A side-impact head-net restraint system, such as Simpson part #36015P is also acceptable. Note- all side-impact head-net restraint systems must have a quick-release mechanism to aid the driver in case of a necessary egress via the passenger side.
Looks like I'll finally be installing one of those pimpy right side nets.
Regards,
Sam

Always wondered what those were for... seemed to be too far from the head to do anything. I guess I'm confused, any info on intended purpose or how they work?
IIRC SCCA pro has, some were, data on the effectiveness of them. They also have the data about the 2 inch lap belts being safer.
SCCA pro has some data from testing by Team Caddilac on why this is safer.
I bought mine from any circle track shop and fabricate it in. Using stock belt buckle and release mechanism. Cost me total of $50
There are currently some kits from several manufacturer. The most common one from safety solutions. But this is pretty pricey. I think it is close to $130

I recently bought a safety solutions one and most places are selling them for $100 now.

team tech (teamtechmotorsports.com) custom made mine for the distances of the dash and cage which for me was important so the net didnt go into the dash. I was told that wraping the net very close to the seat is key as well as the hight of the centerline of the net. Check with the manufactures for guidlines since a net mounted wrong can hurt you easily
what should the net mount to? I would guess the roll bar, but what if your car does not have a dash bar? The dash bar is not a mandatory bar, and some cars don't have them. Maybe the dash bar will be made mandatory now?

I'd imagine you can use the same hardware you would use for harnesses (i.e. eye bolt, big washer) through the firewall.

I'm all for safety but I am wondering if all these changes (HANS device, head restraint seat, extra side nets) are going to make it so difficult to see out of the car that they are going to create wrecks that would not have happened before. This isn't a pro series where we have spotters that tell us if we are clear of a car before taking the line. We have to look for ourselves, which becomes very difficult with all these devices working against that. Good mirrors help but distance judgments are much harder to make looking at mirrors. I'm afraid new drivers will make judgment errors when in close quarters to other cars that they wouldn't have make before when they could quickly turn there head and see where the other cars are.
I did notice when watching FIA GT racing they do require a HANS but do not require the side head restraints and right side nets yet. Why do the US racing series require these while the FIA doesn't??

DR,
I've been running HANS and right side nets for 2 year now. HANS is only a problem in the paddock when you are going in and out of your pit area and looking for traffic.
Right side net is not even a consideration. Once you position it right, it will not hinder your sight or anything else.

I used a HANS all year and found it often interfered when looking to see if I had cleared a car. I've also driven a car with a side head restraint seat and found it also interfered doing this. On an OTE, coming back on track can be scary when you can’t turn your head as well. Maybe I am being too careful when around other cars but unfortunately I have not found that elusive body shop sponsor.

While visual cue is good, I think you should feel one with your car. I applaud you to look and make sure to clear. I have only use mirror for this purpose since day 1 with no problem.
In my short career, I have only have 1 car to car contact so far. This is because she lost it and ran into me.

^^ Agreed.. but I also agree with Andre, that it's mostly just a problem in paddock.
Of course, Andre is also fast enough that he doesn't need his mirrors too often. Maybe that's our problem.
Regardless, my neck hurts most mornings, and I don't need it to get any worse. I'll still be wearing a HANS anytime I'm on track.

i think i'll start wearing one when i'm online. there are some threads that may me shout "NO!!!" out loud and shake my head so hard, i might get hurt.
p.s., Sam, thanks for the headsup. i need to look at the CCR (&GCR) better.

i believe that counts. that is equal to the sparco head restraint add on. also equal to the ones you can get for the aluminum seats. but i guess the rulebook will have the final say.
