Buzzing noise at 4k RPM
I've started hearing a nasty buzzing noise at between 4 and 5k RPM. I can't hear it at all outside these ranges. It seems to be from under the car- but it could be coming from anywhere. My car is a totally stock 2000 Type-R with ~47k miles.
I've already been under the car and can't find anything that's loose- knocked on all the heat shields, and checked all of the exhaust hangers.
Have any of you run into this before? Any thoughts on what else to check?
Thanks in advance!
Larry

You sure you got all the head shields off? There's one that's a bitch to get off b/c it's tucked up above the b-pipe, so you have to drop it down to get the bolts out of the head shield. Also, the heat shields on the actual exhaust manifold have been known to rattle too.

I can't remove them, but I did check every one that I could see. I autocross in DS, and can't legally remove anything before the cat so the heat shields have to stay.

Yes- that's it exactly! It's driving me nuts.

If this is the case- it sounds like the only fix is a new manifold. I wonder if I can get it done under the emissions warranty...
Is there any way to confirm that this is really the issue, short of pulling the manifold?

It could really be a number of things. I have heard rattles from the manifold, heat shields, cat, and even after market headers.

The hydraulic motor mount on the timing belt also gets an anoyying buzz when its going out right at 3500-4000 rev's check its conditon. easy to remove and inspect of car to be sure its ok.
Bringing this thread back from the dead..
Havn't driven my ITR in a week, and mid way to work I started to get this buzzing/scraping noise around 4-4.5K in every gear. The car drives perfectly fine, but it just makes this nasty metalic rattling sound only when you hit that RPM range.
I'll have to check out the heat shields when I get home. My ITR is all stock except for a CAI.

I just installed my stock exhaust, gutted car sound cat, and JDM header the other day. I noticed some "tinging" noises at certain RPM ranges also. But I havent gotten a chance to take a look yet. knowing my car, it could be a couple thousand things lol
Just to update. since there is no real solution to the original problem.
It was the cat heat shields rattling. The weld looks like it broke on one side. Just took some wire and wrapped it tightly around the heatshield and voila.. no more rattle.
$1 fix until the shields really break but my shields look like their in perfect condition.

Read my post on Team Intgera forum.
I fix my rattle by weld the inner tube. 99% this is your problem. Check it out and if the inner tube is loose just weld it to the outer and you done. After I fix that my car souds like brand new.

That wasn't my problem.. my problem turned out to be the cat sheilds rattling. My wire trick was much easier fix than the problem you're referring to in your link.
I didn't have to remove anything off the car, I just wrapped a piece of metal wire around the whole cat and twisted the ends. lol..
This post finally has some solutions for people in the future who are experiencing this rattling problem.
