KYB-GR2 Struts + Coilover questions
Hi, I'm planning on installing kyb gr-2's this weekend on my 91 civic hb. First off, I heard that gr2's with any coilovers will kill them really fast. Is that just with cheap ebay ones? I bought a set of Tenzo-r ones, which aren't nearly the best, but weren't cheap either. Second, will it only shorten the life of them if I drop it too low? I'm planning on no more than 1 1/2inches since i'm putting on 17s.(I know they're heavy and will weigh the car down, but they look so damn good on it). This is only going to be for street use, so yeah... advise accordingly. I also have sets of Neuspeed, H&R, and Eibach springs of different sizes. I don't know how old they are, or how to tell if they're still any good. Which would be a better choice to put on and how can I tell if they springs are still good? New Tenzo coilovers vs. used lowering springs. Any help is appreciated, and don't waste your time by bashing on brands, my car, experience, etc. Everyone starts out somewhere, Thanks.
Hey no problem. I had GR2's a few years ago, and theyre not that bad a shock. However, the two things that will kill a shock fast, as you probably know are ride height and spring rates. Most cheaper sleeve type coilovers are very stiff, usually in the range of 450-500lbs. Honestly the lowering springs would be a better match for a daily driven car, and should be reliable with the GR2's. If the neupseeds and H&Rs are the sport and NOT the race versions, you should be okay with there drop and rate with those shocks. If your going to use the coilovers, dont go past 1.5"s and you should get a couple years out of the shocks without much of an issue, depending on your roads, but if youre going 1.5" you might as well run the springs, especially if its your daily driver.
