'96 Accord LX hot start problem
My '96 Accord LX (F22B2 engine - box stock, 170k miles) has an intermittent hot-start problem. This happened several times when the engine was off for short periods after reaching operating temperature. Nothing would happen when turning the key to start. After a few key turns, the engine would turn slow then start.
I read that the PGM-FI relay (under-dash) can do this, so I've replaced it and now it won't turn/start at all.
I'm hoping this is a relay problem because I don't want the hassle of replacing the starter.
Any ideas? Relay? Starter?
Thank you for your help,
Tom

The main relay won't keep the starter from turning the engine over, first check should be battery terminals and cable connections. The problem might lie with the starter contacts; the cave man test is to have the key held in the crank position while some one smacks the starter. if it starts cranking the contacts need replaced. You can also use a test light to be sure there is 'crank signal' going to the starter solenoid from the ignition switch. Most 'autoelectrical' shops have starter contacts on hand for ND starters. Very easy and cheap to replace.

hondadude,
Thanks for the great advice on the starter contacts and the picture. I went ahead and pulled the starter so I have it out. Now the question is .... should I try to fix the old starter or buy a new one? The contact replacement sounds like exactly the right fix, but is anything else in the starter/solenoid likely to fail soon, given the 170k miles. The car runs great and I plan to keep it indefinitely, so would a new starter/solenoid be a wise investment at this point?
Thank you again for your advice.

The local Autoelectric shop near me has the contacts for $4 each. The Honda starters usually have one square shaped contact and the other one is 'crescent moon' shaped. If you have the starter out it is a quick job to slap in the new contacts. Way cheaper than replacing the entire starter.
