ok i got a 1990 crx si and i have play in my steering. i've changed upper and lower balljoints and control arm bushings, innner and outer tierods, steering rack and i still have play in the steering. i was told it could be the universal joint on the steering colum #13 in pic i think? anyways can anyone tell me how to check it to see if thats the problem. much appreciated

remove the cover at the bottom and take a look...

what do you mean you changed the steering rack? replaced the whole rack? with what?

 

To check #13 you should remove the steering column from the car. put some vise grips on the shaft between the u joint and the splines. you need to hold #10 and then grab #13 and check for play.



I doubt the u-joint is the problem. remove your steering wheel, put your thumb on #4 and pull the steering column shaft down. if there's no more play in the wheel then the hanger bushing on the steering column shaft is worn out. go try this and post the results.

 

I don't see why you need to remove anything. It's just a small U-joint, just put your hand on one side of the joint and shake the steering wheel (which is attached to the other side). If it moves side to side a lot it is worn out, if not probably is good.

I have never seen a car or even heard of a car that had a worn out steering column. It doesn't take that much stress or anything really.

the column is fine. this is the hanger bushing attached to the steering shaft. There should be rubber between the bushing and shaft. when it gets old it dryrots, cracks and then your steering wheel has play.

With the steering gearbox out of the car, i could grab the wheel and move it side to side and up and down. after removing the retaining collar, the rubber from the hanger bushing fell out. i searched for a replacement bushing and found that it's included with a new steering shaft.

so i gotta replace the whole steering shaft? if so you think its worth buying new or just getting one from the auto wreckers?

you checked the u joints and hanger bushing? what did you find?
