they do exactly what it says. they 'space' out your wheels. pushing them further out, pretty much like lowering the offset of your wheel.

uhhh.....horizontal. i dont see how it can push it up vertically. lol.

its like this... without spacer 0=......with spacer 0:=

0 is the wheel
= is the axle
: is the spacer

lol. dont know how much that helps.

They basically allow you to use wider wheels and bigger tyres in situations where the setup would otherwise rub on a trailing arm or inner fender.

Wheel spacers that are sold specifically for racing use will be safe enough for use on the road.

Many Honda Challenge racers will have to use spacers on their DC and EG cars when they go to 225 series tyres or wider.

Bear in mind that if you space your wheels too far out, you could introduce problems in other areas. For example if you space your wheels too far out on a car that's basically a daily driver, and you are using stock spring rates, you could end up rubbing on the outer part of the fender.

another thing to look for when buying spcers to to see if they are hub centric or not. try to get hub centric ones but if that isnt possible then then remember to torque down your wheels while your car is still up in the air and remember the criss-cross star pattern.

Also if you go more than 5mm or so you'll probably want to be looking at getting extended lugs otherwise things could go badly
