Default losing power in my prelude

just need some advice i have a 1994 honda prelude. And the car runs fine while its cold, but once it gets warm, i start feeling the loss of power from shifting from 1st to 3rd, i can feel my car bogging down.

Its an h22, just had the timing belt done and a new water pump put in. even took the time to change the spark plugs hoping that it would make a difference...but didnt..

any advice on what to check is appreciated.

thanks.

When you shift from 1st to 3rd, you tend to notice a big drop in power.....

If you just mean that your car feels less responsive when it is hot....ehh...no ****...

Spark plug wires! Hard to believe but just give it a try. Just happened to my brothers car.

the question still remains. why are you shifting from 1st to 3rd? and at what rpm? naturally if you're just driving normally, shifting from 1st to 3rd, you would bog. rpms drop too low. unless you were going like 25 in first. ehh..

Did the problem start after the timing belt change, YES, realign timing belt to the correct marks. NO, we need more technical info and a vacuum guage reading.

lol. let me rephrase that,

when i shift through gears 1st to 2nd then to third, 1st-3rd. sorry about the confusion.

but yah, i also feel it on the freeway bogging down a little when i accelerate.

it only does this when the car is warm.

can it really be the spark plug wires? im afraid if i purchase them, and its not the problem i might get stuck with them...does anyone know autozones exchange policy?

Post what you pm'd him in the thread as well, you could prob help a lot more people regarding this matter. Were you able to pinpoint exactly what the problem was?

sorry didn't think of it that way at the time, heres what i sent the guy

hey man whats going on- saw that your car is having prolems with power loss. do you notice or can you tell me around what rpms does it feel like that? Same thing was happening to my car a few days ago. Check all exhaust bolts, make sure the header is bolted down nice if its aftermarket- an exhaust leak at the header makes a good ammount of power loss. Also try cleaning your IACV, all you need is a 12mm socket and some carb/brake cleaner. If you dont know how or where its located let me know and i'll be more than happy to take some pics of where it is and how to clean it step by step. Also try cleaning your EGR Vavle- you can search hondatech on how to do it, be very careful though, some people have ended up stripping the bolts. To clean the egr valve you just need carb cleaner, search it or let me know and i can take some pics for you. You can block off the egr, but try cleaning it first- cuz if you block it you get a check engine light code 12- and than you have to do some wiring of your ecu. Also check your fuel filter. but if your car has 100k miles or over, tune up wouldn't be bad, oil sparkplugs (ngk), oem honda wires, and a new fuel filter should be good.

I didn't actually pinpoint what was wrong with my car, but after replacing the header gasket, and cleaning the IACV, and the EGR valve, it worked fine- i did all 3 things at the same time though- both parts were very dirty though. Hope this helped you guys some- i know it was bugging me like crazy, now my car is running fine.

nice thanks.

just cleaned my iac today. runs good. but i still have the leak. so i attempted to look at my exaust and piping, and found a hole. its not very big, it looks like its just seaping out right near the tail pipe.

But cuz this really be causing me to lose so much power in my car?

I did an exaust leak search on line, and most responses were the car ran bad, until it their car was warm then it ran fine. but mine is completely opposite.

any suggestions?

thanks.

im still not sure about a hole near your tail pipe would cause that- try cleaning the EGR valve bro, im telling you i think this made the most difference. so when the car is cold it runs good- than when it gets to normal driving temps, it starts acting funny. I think it could possibly be the EGR bro. If your good with electrics and wiring and what not- theres a "How To" on here to block off the egr valve. You remove the part, and you can make a blockoff plate using 2 soda cans, or get one off ebay *not that expensive*, than you have to get some wires, and send a signal somewhere thats like .5volts or i dunno man i stopped reading after all that electrical stuff- i hate it. Anyways try cleaning it first, the egr i mean

yeah egr seems likely...theres no way a little leak at the tailpipe is the problem. you can test plug wires for resistance, they should be less than 10k ohms per foot. also check out the dist cap and rotor and the spark plug gap...thats all i can think of. gl

cool, thanks for the info guys.

i found a site online showing how to clean the egr.

But im a little confused....

http://www.hondaprelude.to/for...59722

its saying i need an egr port kit also? or can i just clean the egr with brake cleaner as i did with the iacv?

i just bought the gasket.

and im following the directions, but when i look at the picture, and then my engine, some of it looks opposite...

thanks for the help on this everyone. i really appreciate all of this.

oops one more question.

is it necessary to do the whole port thing? or can i just get around with cleaning just the egr?

is this legit? if so id like to do this.

just do what that guy did- those are the right pictures of the egr and since you cleaned the iacv thats basically it bro- just get all that carbon junk out of the egr, and put it back on, see how it works- i dont think you need that porting kit. its mostly all that buildup thats screwing it up.
