Clunking noise from wheel...can you figure it out?
92 eg hatch b16a2
Ok I was swapping to 00 Si brakes up front when I had some tie rod issues. The driver side ball joint (tie rod) was looking kinda crappy but hadn't given me any problems prior to the swap. The passenger side tie rod was replaced during the swap. (I was going to replace both but honda only had the pass in stock). Well after everything was hooked up and bleed, I took it around the block for a quick test drive and noticed that from both sides there was a clunking noise in unison with the bumps in the road. I thought that the lower ball joints were loose so I pulled the wheels off and got them as tight as they would go. Back around the block and the noise was still there.
My question: Would a bad tie rod ball joint or the car being out of allignment cause this noise? Cause I tightened every bolt that I loosened up 3 times just to make sure. And there was no noise prior to the swap.
Any suggestions or comments about your experiences would be appreciated....I'm leaning towards the driverside tie rod ball joint but who knows I might be missing something.
Oh yea btw...car stops on a dime and brakes extreamly smooth so I dont' think its an axle or brake problem....but who knows???

maybe upper balljoint, maybe lugs are loose (80 lb/ft). it's hard to say without getting it on a lift and looking at it.

He's right. Get it up on a lift and spin all the tires and see if anything is knocking up agaist them. I had a clicking noice coming from 2 of my tires and it turned out to be crappy ball joints so I just replaced them.

Jack the car up and grad the knunkle right below the upper ball joint pull in and out and left and right if you have any movement in it replace it. FYI the upper ball joint only comes as a complete arm assy about $60 or so. I would also replace the other tie rod end.
Ok well I checked the upper and lower ball joints....they are good...very firm and no play up, down, side to side.
I replaced the other tie rod and the noise has gotten less noticable....but is still there.....but i've drivin the car and it handels just fine....I"ve taken it up to about 85mph and drives smooth and changes lanes just fine....
I appreciate your help guys anyone else have an idea...oh and the noise is only from the drive side wheel assymbley. Not both sides as stated in my original post
