Oil level may be low...vtec solonoid maybe clogged(dirty)...or if u have an intake..check the filter ur car might not be getting enough air..happened to me once then i bent my valves...if the filter is to close up the intake its bad....it almost has to be hanging on the tip of the intake...just a thought...since it happened to me once..

my buddy had the same problem...vtec cut at 6500 like hittin a rev limiter, and had issues throughout every other gear as well....checked his dipstick and therewas minimal oil on it but the car didn't leak a drop

i support the oil level argument....check it and make sure it is up to par....h22's are known for oil consumption, and since vtec is mainly based off oil pressure, this could be the problem

how would you unclog a Solenoid?..My V-tec's been acting up..It doesn't hit as hard as it use to..I dunno wtf is going on..I perform oil changes regularly and check my oil level everytime I fill up my car with gas (every week) just to be on the safe side..Motor is about to hit 80k

when you take the soleniod off theres a filter there sometimes it gets clogged or bad...ive taken mines out and cleaned it...oil passes through there...mine was pretty dirty..

mine was doing this. check oil level 1st like they said. cleaning the vtec solenoid screen is ez. i cleaned both. took the solenoid off and cleaned the itty bitty one there then unbolted the whole thing from the head and cleaned that one. and triple check your wires. make sure there all tight and fully pushed in.

Mine consumes oil too. I'll consume about 4 quarts in 3000 miles. I took it to honda because I didn't see any leaks anywhere. I was told it was pulling air so hard it was actually pulling oil from the engine and would occasionally smoke out of the exhaust. I took it to two more places and was told the same thing. They said I could fix it but my horsepower would take a hit. I think I'd rather keep my custom intake and just add oil

When I'm low on oil, I can usually tell two things.

1. VTEC seems sluggish.
2. For some reason my engine light comes on but reports faulty fuel sensor. I pop in oil and after a few drives, light turns off. Haven't figured out this one but why replace the fuel sensor. Gas mileage hasn't changed yet.

Check oil, wires, and please make sure the engine is warm before trying to go in to VTEC.

What is the exact error code from the ecu? There is no such component called a "fuel sensor".

i'm not sure he's following us very well...

Other than what everyone else has said to check, make sure your VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is clean... If you're speedometor (which is controlled by VSS) is off at all, VTEC will sometimes not engage. I had this problem after my swap.

and btw, buy a HELMS Manual

i can vouch for the low oil, sluggish vtec thing. i burn oil very fast, like most ppl with preludes whenever the oil is low, like really low vtec is sluggish and sometimes doesn't engage very well, then when i fill up with oil it gets much better. i found this out when i first got my car and just assumed the it would burn oil aat the same rate as my bmw, it didn't!

Tell us a little bit about this car. I'm assuming this is swapped from the looks of your avatar. How did this start happening?

any honda technician (a real one) will tell you that all VTEC motors consume oil. it is not abnormal.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I agree, but to the poster that said he burned 4 quarts off, within 3,000 miles - that is way too much oil consumption.
