Default fluctuating voltage

ok so on my way back from houston, after having some work done on my cooling fans, I noticed the headlights would get real bright then go back to normal, back and forth. So I turn on my turbo timer to read voltage, and its shooting from 14.4 to 15.6, then back down. Now I got one new fan installed, and while they were in there they tightened up all my turbo bolts, wrapped my downpipe, changed coolant, and replaced oil line. what I want to know is, is it possible something didnt get reconnected, or is my alternater mysteriously goofed up after the repairs? Was working fine before the repairs. sorry for the long post but please shed some light as far as what to look for. thanx in advance

sounds like faulty voltage regulator.

I was hoping you wouldnt say that but I'm sure your right. this is my second alternater in 3 years from alterstart. first time voltage was too low now too high.

take the car to your local auto parts store and have them test the charging system and battery

Or a quick test, if you got a DVOM, start your car, turn on all your accesories, lights, radio, a/c, everything electric, then check the voltage from your alternator. See if it's in the range of around 13.5 and 14.5 volts. Then see if it fluctuates as you rev up the motor. My car car did the same thing when my voltage reg. went bad.

that will work for voltage only BUT it won't tell you the amps that the alternator is putting out nor if the diode pattern is good....thats why it should be thrown on a good charging system tester

no test needed. you need a voltage regulator 100%. dont make things complicated.

The ones around here started being bitches about it,some stopped doing it with modded cars, and they started putting age restrictions on the car "if its older than ___" I cant remeber how old,but they wouldn't do it for my ex's 1995 Ej1 civic when I took it over there one time

If that's the case, simply call their corporate office, explain the scenerio how their employees are changing corporate policies because they're too damn lazy or ignorant to do their job, and it should get setteled really quick.

making things complicated is telling someone all they need is the regulator when the voltage regulator is internal to the alternator, thus the alternator must be replaced not just the regulator.

LOL...show me one person who's going to pay 90 bucks for a regulator then take their alternator apart and put a new one in when you can get a life time warranty altrernator for 30 bucks more and call it a day? the way you're talking is the complicated way, maybe thats how frenchies do it in nova scotia....

30 dollar , lifetime warranty alternator eh? i never said it was the better way to go , i said you can just replace the voltage reg. im not french thanks , obviously. if you think its complicated to put a voltage regulator in an alternator than you need more hands on.

yea der eh.....read the post 90 bucks for a regulator or spend an extra 30 for the alternator (to equal 120)......maybe doing a voltage regular isn't that complicated but i guess simple math is north of the border, eh?

That's messed up, one of my best friends is a store manager at an Autozone and another is a store manager at Kragen both here is central cali. He's never heard of not performing diagnostic test on modded cars, or cars older than a certain year. That sounds like something a dealership would say around here. I'll get my buddies to call corporate for you, if it is one of those companies wussing out on you, what's your area code?
