Default Manifold Material Choice.

I dont feel there has been a legit answer in this thread about manifold /flange material choice .

Why is everyone saying mild is better. Im come over here all to time for the FI forums and all i see is high quality SS manifolds with no complaints.

Mild doesn't expand as much as SS.

thats all behind the reasoning? is it something to do with our VW manifolds being squeezed infront of the firewall?

No not at all, stainless is used for the piping, mild steel is used for the flanges because of the way it absorbed heat and reacts to it. I think full race uses stainless on there header flange, and I believe they cut little slits into the flange to allow for expansion.

Some people use mild steel on everything and then just coat it.

is that why some are cut where they slide onto the studs?
