Default 1st Annual Western States Road Race Classic-Karting @ Sears

Western States Road Race Classic

This was my first road race in the kart. I would like to preface this with a simple WOW! The weather guessers were calling for a clear and cool day. They were right. We get to Infineon at 7 A.M. and get unloaded.

The karts that were racing in our field consisted of:

ICC spec (125cc)
Honda Stock moto (125)
Formula 80

We had brought 2 80s and one stock moto 125 to race that day. I would be piloting my CR80 powered T7. The day started with the first practice session. Novices were excluded from this session. The second practice session was open to Novice drivers. The first 3 laps were setup as follow the leader so that we Novices could get a feel for what we getting ourselves into.

Before and after the drivers meeting, the thrashfest continued in the pits as we got all the final little pieces bolted and safety wired down on the karts. I was nervous about getting the kart tech’d. When I got my sticker I realized that my karting mentor did his job well.

Getting onto pre-grid was when I finally realized that I was in for a ride. All week long I was more concerned about prepping the kart so that nothing falls off. The speed and vibration will beat the kart up. So I get a push start and get onto turn 1 going up hill. With the rush of wind going in and through my helmet, I knew that I was starting to go quite fast. Being able to go through the Carousel for the first time was very intimidating. I was not at speed because of the warm up laps but seeing the crest and the sweeping left hander was very cool.

After a couple more laps, I had an idea of what the layout was like. From there, we headed to the scales and back to the pits.

The racers.

First race:

The track:

Me staging for pre-grid

Another shot of me staging

Sonny (karting mentor) staging for pre-grid.

The first race was an amazing experience. I screwed up the start. I stalled the engine and was left stranded at the starting line. I got a push from one of the volunteers and off I went. In the back of my head, I kept on hearing, “You have cold tires…take it easy for the first 2 laps.” And so I did. From turn 1 through turn 5 I was scared. Then came the Carousel. OH ****. I lifted and coasted through it for and realized that now I have it under my belt, lets see what I can do. Going into turn 7 I braked very early to see where the apex was. I braked too much and fell off the pipe. More banging through gears to get the right RPM range and I was off. The trick to turn 7 was to take it very wide so you could setup for the rest of turn 7. The back section turns 8-10 were blazing fast. I of course was lifting at every opportunity.

Going into turn 11 I was more comfortable and was getting traction from the tires. So lap 2 begins and it was on. I got back to the Carousel and still lifted. I actually lifted in the Carousel until the second race. The memorable experience I had in race 1 was before turn 7. I was starting to brake deeper as the race went on and then I went too deep. I locked up the rears and saw wall, track, wall, track, wall, track. I was scared again. The race was red flagged for a crash and we were directed to head to the pits.

Here is the action shots from Race 1:

The second race was full of chaos. It started great and then stuff happened.

Pre grid for second race:

Terry

Sonny

Me:

The start on the second race was very cool. I was able to launch and stay with the lead pack. Here is where it gets very “iffy”. The old cliché of “You can’t win a race in turn 1.” means more to me now that I shared the track with other racers. As I was going up turn 1, other karts were holding their lines as other karts didn’t care about the line. Karts were getting pushed off the track. I was able to get through the wrecks and proceed on with the race. After about 3 laps the black and yellow flags come out.

There was a very bad crash before turn 11. We waited almost 45 minutes before we got back to racing. The race director decided that the best start considering the situation would be a classic Lemans start.

Sonny told me to be very careful with this type of start. The track temps dropped 10 degrees in 45minutes and our tires were cold. As I was getting staged, the volunteer realized that I was a rookie, X designation on kart and helmet, and told me:

“Here is some advice for this start, start off slow and stay on the inside wall. Everyone will be trying to get a launch and the will be going to the far wall.”

He was correct. He was too correct. Everyone launched like mad banshees and a large portion of the field crashed into the far wall. I was able to pass 3/4 of the field while coasting and letting the clutch out.

By the latter part of the second race I was going through the Carousel at 1/2 throttle. With some more track time, I should be able to rip through it. I was told that I should be able to go flat out from the exit of turn 7 to turn 11. First race I laughed at that notion. By the end of the second race I only lifted at Turn 8a for a second. The second cliché that I have more respect for is “Catching the racer is one thing, passing is another.” I was able to catch another fellow karter, but the line he was taking prevented me from passing. It was a great time.

Overall, it was truly an amazing experience. Going wheel to wheel has taught me a lot about lines and overall setup. I am so ready for next year’s racing season.

Mario,

One rule of this forum is to not post threads about "my first autocross/rally/roadrace/HPDE/etc". These threads are not appropriate and will be locked. Aside from taking up forum space, these threads do no serve much purpose.

RJ, why is this thread not locked?

Jason-

I do realized that I did abide by the rule set forth by the forum, but in my defense, I wanted to make it known to the masses that there is an affordable form of wheel to wheel racing that will help any driver become better.

The intent was getting information to the masses.

My apologies.

No problem Mario. I appreciate your desire to get this out to the masses, but we do need to follow the forum rules set forth by the moderators. You know what happens if we dont...

Mario,

Just delete the work "first" from your first sentence and it'll be all good!

I enjoyed the read and am glad you shared it. I just got a Kart a month ago and can't wait to play with it! Was cool reading up on your experience!

What organization runs these events? Little karts on a big track sounds like a blast!

The World Karting Association and Woodbridge Kart Club run karts at the big tracks on the East Coast. Between the WKA and WKC we run VIR, Summit Point, Road Atlanta, and Daytona.

RJ, I too think it's an awesome thread and would love to get into karting myself. But maybe I am one of the few who have read the Road Racing/Autocross Forum FAQ/Guidelines you stickied in this forum. Here is a direct quote from you in this sticky:

Posts on "my first autocross/rally/roadrace/HPDE/etc" are not appropriate and will be locked - they really dont serve much purpose other than to waste forum space.

Maybe the wording should be changed if you say there is nothing wrong with this thread. I think this whole "rule" should be removed as firstime stories have always given me inspiration to join something we are all trying to promote in this forum.

...just abiding by the rules.

Ok... well its a rule, its not absolute and things are followed at the mods discretion. This was a great "first" post - very entertaining, great pics, good story Most of them just arent like this.

At any rate The meaning of the rule was put in place to avoid the stuff usually associates "i did my first autox and now i want to fix my suspension and engine and get better tires and post pics of your autox cars and then and then and then!" type of post.

There is a little "report to moderator" button you can use if you think something should be moved, etc -- .

Thanks for looking out

Agreed! I personally got into HPDE's from reading about peoples experiences, including "first time" experiences from others in this forum.

Mario's thread about his first race, including the pictures has created the desire within me to look into the possibility of karting.

It would be unfortunate if some rule (not agreed on by those reading these boards) prohibited people from sharing their experiences with those who frequent this forum. Wouldnt we all be happier if we were able to expose more people to the sport we love? What if we converted a street racer into someone who dedicated their racing to the track? Its a small difference in this world, but it is a difference. We'd be that much safer and so would our children.

So what do we say? Change the rules to allow first time race experience? I can see the moderators reasoning for making this rule as a lot of newcomers might interpret their first HPDE as their first race, but with a little word changing, we can convey that only your first W2W race should be allowed. Not your first HPDE or first AutoX. (although I feel this should be allowed as well)

It can say something like this:

"If you are going to post threads on your "first" event, please keep these to your first wheel to wheel race. This does not include time trials or HPDE events.

This may suit those that feel first events should not be posted in this forum. But personally, why put a cap on what people can post about? If it involves Road Racing/Autocrossing, then let it be an open forum on this topic.

Just my thoughts...

Mario, can you suggest a modern 250 association... I have been out of it since the mid 1980's when supercart was around

Mschu:

What kind of 250 were you racing? Was it a spec twin cylinder Rotax with bodywork (aka "Swifty")? Sprint chassis with a Honda CR250? Most everything larger than 125cc gets put in a class called "Unlimited" or "FKE" or "ICE". In those classes, you see pretty much anything from a 250cc 2 stroke to a 450cc 4 stroke.

Honestly though, the fun is in the "slower" classes. In the 125cc and 80cc classes, there are TONS of guys to race with. They are no slouches either. My 125cc shifter saw 114 mph in the draft at this race. The 80cc shifter was pulling 103 mph in the draft at this same track last year. The speed is fun, but it's the racing that really puts a grin on your face.

Here are 2 sanctioned bodies that handle road racing in California:

IKF Region 11

NCK Road Racing

The race last weekend was an NCK Event.

you could run the yamaha(TZ) or the Honda(RS) GP motor... all water cooled, rotax really wasn't up to snuff back then, I take it things are different now

Swift... yes. eagle came on late, I was moving on then a season later

You have more ***** than I do. You loose it bad in a Kart at 90 MPH on a road course and it could get ugly. I'll stick to enclosed vehicles with cages...but, more power to you. Looks like you had fun. Good luck.
