Hood release cable broke.
haha that happened to me a long time ago. what you need to do is get that back in its place and zipper tie the **** down and it should work but expect about an hour or dicking around under the bumper.....unless you remove it, haha
See the entire ball end of the cable came out, so I can't even figure out where the hell it is supposed to sit. It's really pissing me off because I have an oil leak and really have to check the level and top the **** off. All I want to do is get the hood released.

there's only two spots where your problem possible occur, one is by the hood release by the kick panel, the other would be right at the hood latch. if broke at the hood release inside the car, use a plier to pull it. if broke by the hood latch, you must remove the bumper figure it out, this should be a fun experience.
I can reach up and grab the cable. It is detached from the release mechanism. The cable isn't broken or anything, just came off, so I'm trying to figure out exactly "what the cable pulls". That x-ray view helps some. With any luck I'll get it without having to take off the bumper.

If the cable broke inside the car,
try pulling the inner cable with pliers..
Here is kind of an "X-ray view" of the mechanism...
It pulls from the passenger side to the right...
