Default How important is Torque?

How important is Torque? Hondas are fast on the high end but slow as **** off the line, is hp more important than torque. IE if you have a car with a lot of torque does that make it fast 1\4 mile? Or is horsepower more relevent?? TECHS please inform me, I need to know for sure.

Torque is low range, hp is high rpms. So they're kinda of even on the track, except you need more hp when your gettin toward the ends of shift where the really good GO comes from.

I think of torque as what gets you started and horseys as whats gonna gonna get you further.

Eitherway, there both important.

Torque is the twisting action that gets your drive wheels moving. Horsepower is the actual amount of work that this torque is performing.

Horsepower = Torque * RPM / 5252 (someone correct me if this constant is wrong)

Honda engines are low-displacement, so that's why they don't have a lot of torque relative to high-displacement cars (e.g. Stangs and Vettes). According to the formula, Hondas need higher RPM's in order to produce the same amount of horsepower as a higher torque engine. That's why Hondas, Toyotas, and other small sport compacts are high-revving cars - they have little torque and need to rev high to produce power. Most domestics redline around 5000 RPM because they produce more torque than the imports and don't need to rev as high.

Torque means everything when you're talking about acceleration.

So now im thinking, why the hell did I buy a honda, if torque is so important, I wish I bought an Eclipse GSx or WRX, does the 8000 redline mean that we have more time at the high "go" period than high torque cars?

ive always been told:

"Torque is what gets you 0-60"
"HP is what keeps you there"

Torque is the turning (centripedal) force your engine produces. Horsepower is merely the rate at which this force (torque) is exerted. That is why horsepower in other countries is sometimes expressed as watts --> the unit for power. Therefore, if you have ample amounts of torque, but a low horsepower rating, you will not nessesarily be fast (ex: turbo diesels, and heavy duty trucks). Torque comes into play many times with weight. A 2-ton steel muscle car NEEDS alot of torque to get it moving, and at the same time needs the horsepower to keep it going.

The difference in Hondas is that we deal more with power/weight ration than torque, drop a B16 into a ford f-350 duallie and see what happens. We are more concered with putting down a small amount of force at a high rate than alot of force at a slower rate.. hope this helped some.

and if i got anything wrong (you physics guys out there) correct me

There are good ways on getting/ at least save torque from your SiR:
-Good cams
-Good ECU and engine tuning
-Bored throttle body(such as SPOON) that can improve your mid range and throttle response
-Keep stock airbox and use hi-performance inbox filter
-Use 4-2-1 header
-Use proper sized B-pipe
-Use 98specR final gear(improves A LOT on accleration)
-Raise compression ratio by using SPOON/Mugen/TODA head gasket

honda's may lack low end torque, but that is why they have high final drives compared to car's with low end torque. also what they lack down low they more than make up for it up top.<vtec>
