Default will cutting carbon-fiber cause the weave to slowly unravel or damage or anything?

I have a Seibon OEM-style carbon-fiber hood, and I was planning on installing a set of Top Secret-style hood pins ( the ones sold by Coast Fab ). However, installing these requires a pretty decent-sized hole to be cut into the hood. Will cutting-into the carbon-fiber weave cause the weave to deform over time or unravel or anything like that?

Here's a link to the hood pins: http://www.coastfab.com

I really like these hood pins, but I like my hood even more. Please only inform me if you are sure of your answer.

Not if you use a saw at high speed rpms.

What can be said is that it has been done and lasted a long time for a lot of cars.

No, I don't have any personal experience with it, actually I have always wondered this also....

If it was me doing it, I would at least re-poly the holes after I drilled them....

That's the thing though... these hood pins aren't just about drilling holes, they're about cutting a hole in the hood.

What do you mean? A hole too big to drill? Or some odd shape?

I don't think that the link in the first post works right... take a look at the link that I just posted and you'll understand what I'm saying.

Hmm...I like those....very nice...how much??

(yes borat voice...I know, I'm addicted)

LOL, uh, I suppose I would do the same, just try to re-seal the whole weave/layers with some poly after I cut out the shape I needed.

The thing that ruins those hoods is when moisture gets underneath the poly....I don't think you will have problems with it unwinding or anything like that....I suppose most people that do hood pins don't even re-poly the holes and they end up ok...

I'm really embarrassed to ask this, but is poly available in like a spray can or something? What about using Honda-Bond around the mounting area.

The hood pins cost about $90.00.

It seems that they use some kinda gel coating on the hood....either way I'm not sure that poly is the best thing to use anymore...

You could use some honda bond to keep the moisture out....just be careful that you don't use too much

LOL I found that on the same site you're buying the pins from on accident....their prices aren't bad....make me wanna get a CF'er...

I drilled my hood with a freakin metal drill bit at the time and so far so good. I know I know I was at school and it was all I had. Anyway the hole's and weave seem to be holding up good.

Those would be awesome to replace the hideous hood pins I have now. I just am not \sure how to take the ones I have out and put something like that in.

it will not fray, it is a cured fabric. Higher quality fiberglass parts are made out of fabric too not mat. Kevlar will fray because it does not fully saturate.
