Default alternator not charging... :(

Do u guys think i need a new alternator? I have a B16 in a CRX. At low RPM's its cool but once i open VTEC or hit the freeway the battery light comes on unless i keep it over 4500 RPM. Sometimes itll idle at 1200 with the battery light on and when it goes back down to 800 the light will turn off its a wierd problem. Any help would be appreciated. THX in advance...

here's my suggestion but others might disagree: go to advanced auto parts or auto zone..they will check the integrity of your alternator for free....or if you dont wanna do that...do it the ghetto way....run the car...pull the positive terminal off the battery..your alternatore SHOULD sustain the engine and the engine should continue to run...i'm not all for this method but from the sounds of it..your alternator does seem to be dying on you...

I accidentally did that today. My car didn't even blink, I guess my alt.'s good.

I would take it to the parts house for testing . It sounds like the alt is on its way out and might still be able to put off enough to keep the car running but not sustain the system and charge at the same time.

If the alt is bad then do your homework before trying to replace it. With ef's its not a simple task.
