bad GSR tranny, what do you guys think it is?
I bought a GSR tranny to replace my LS from a local guy. If I start off in 1st gear, shift to 2nd, then 3rd, and 4th, and 5th, everything seems to work fine (at low RPMs at least, but I can't shift hard yet because I haven't broken the new clutch in yet). But if I downshift from 5th to 4th, it doesn't want to go in. If I tilt the shifter a little to the right, or wiggle it around a bit while trying to push it into 4th, it'll go in. If I downshift into 3rd, it'll go in but grind every time. Same applies to both gears if doing this at a standstill in nuetral, even with the car off (besides 3rd gear grinding since that obviously can't grind with the car off). I asked my dad what it is (he used to be a mechanic for 5-10 years) and he thinks it's the synchros. But there's one more thing, the shifter sits crooked, more toward the driver side, when in nuetral. I swapped the linkage out for known good linkage, same thing. And if I tilt the shifter just a little to the passenger-side, it seems to go perfectly into 4th gear without the problem described earlier. What could cause the shifter to be tilted like that, and to cause the problem with 3rd and 4th? TIA for any help.
(BTW The mainshaft bearing also makes a noise, and the seller promised me the tranny was perfect with no grinds... I think I'm going to put my stock tranny back in tomorrow and get my money back
)

So to me it sound's like harsh downshift engagements. could be that the valvebody is binding up and operating as smooth as it should. (this is probably why the guy was selling it in the first place)
Get with someone that knows something on tranny's and test ride w/him(or her) and show them exactly what you mean. Next, get a diag.

My guess would be the change holder and the 3/4 synchro rings need to be replaced.
I'd be happy to buy that GS-R transmission from you. Sounds like an easy fix for me.

normally , if syncros were culprit , it would grind going shifting up and down into the gear that grinds. has it popped out of gear on you while driving? if the answer is yes , im gonna say its somin to do with your linkage yes. obviously the shifter is not sitting in the right spot or so youve said , thats a good indicator. if your slave or master cylinder starts to go bad , it can give same symtoms. grinding going into gears , impossible to put in reverse , hard to pull into gear , so on.
First of all, explain 'valvebody' and 'change holder' to me.
I had my dad look at it and try shifting, not driving though, and he really kn ows his stuff when it comes to engines and trannies. The thing is that he's more familiar with American cars and not so much the internals of Hondas.
Also to what cranny said, it does not pop out of gear at all. I also replaced the linkage with my old linkage which worked perfect with my LS tranny, and the same exact problem is there and the shifter sits exactly the same, crooked. Reverse works fine, and every other gear except the downshift of 3rd and 4th.

Exhaust is stock (well, a shortened stock exhaust). Shifter is stock. Linkage isn't hitting anything, I don't hear any noises down there and I would've noticed it too while climbing under there and looking at it. I do have the DC Sports header but that wouldn't cause any problems because it's nowhere near the linkage and is almost like stock anyway.
I'm about to go put my old tranny back in in about 1/2 hour.

Well my car is running again with my stock LS trans, and I can really feel the difference in acceleration between LS and GSR trannies even without taking it above 4k rpm and with easy shifting (breaking the clutch in). But I'm still curious to know what is wrong the the GSR tranny, and what I could do with it or how much I can sell it for as is.

crack it open dude , have a look at the syncros , if tranny had been abused , you will see it inside. metal grinds on the magnet , rounded off edges on gears and syncro sleeves. take reverse sensor out. take ball and spring bolts out. take the big cap off the end of tranny that has a hole for 3/8 drive ratchet to fit right in. take all 12 mm bolts out of the tranny. use spring pliers to expand the ring in the end cap. split tranny. if your interested in looking and need to know more about the inside workings let me know.
I wish I had the time to split it and look at it, just for fun and to learn, but I don't really have time now. I need to take a break for a little while from working on my car because of school and work because I have no time to study anymore.

Is that to my question or frontwheelfanatic's?
