Default Clutch issues, what to get, where to buy, do it myself type questions.

Hey there guys. It's been a long time since I've been here. Been to busy riding my bicycle. Anyhoo...

I'm encountering an acceleration problem with my 1990 CRX (DX, 1.5, manual tranny). When I am cruising on the highway and in gear and want to speed up to pass a car (or say I'm coming up on an incline) I'll press on the gas but instead of accelerating, the engine will rev a couple thousand RPMs before actually engaging and accelerating. This will also happen pretty much in any gear. I thought changing the MTF would help but it didn't really do much. After searching here and other sources, I've determined I need to replace my clutch. I assume this is the same reason why I sometimes can't shift out of 5th when I'm slowing down and I'm riding the clutch until I stop completely? Or why I'm grinding when I shift into reverse?

Now, calling around to various parts stores, an OEM clutch kit seems pretty reasonable, from $130 to $200. Calling around to repair shops to see how much it would cost to have them do it... now that's crazy! $600-$800? Wow!

Is this something I can do in my driveway? I know I'd have jack it up, drop the tranny etc but working in the cold here in PA will suck. How long would this take? This car is my daily driver so I definitely need it back on the road as soon as possible. Thanks in advance for the help!

Thanks for the reply. Almost didn't find my post as it was 3 pages back already! Anyways, looks like my dad's friend is gonna do it for $250, parts and labour included. I'll just be getting an OEM clutch kit as this is just a stock daily driver (90 CRX DX with 1.5 DPFI). Is there any OEM kit I shouldn't be getting? What would be good for a daily driver? I put about 1000 miles of mostly highway driving. I might actually help out with the install on Saturday. We'll have to see though. Thanks again!

any stock replacement should do it. i used an exedy oem replacement before and it was a-ok.

my advice is make SURE to torque the clutch bolts to spec. i mean on most fasteners you can kind of tell by feel how much to torque....but the clutch bolts surprised me on how low the value was, and how they felt. instincts would've told me to tighten them way more, but i followed factory specs and it's held up well. duh right

get in there and help the dude out too so you can do it yourself later if need be
