Default throwing code 8 topd dead center sensor in my 94 cx hatch

only throws it sometimes, will running it with the code on hurt my motor or gas mileage or will it be ok runnign with it on, also can i replace just that sensor inside the distributor?

Sounds like another case of lack of shielded cable being non-existant or cut too short.
