Default egr valve??

Watup gurus. just a few questions.
Whats is an egr valve, what does it do/control, and what kinda emissions related problems can it cause? (i've been told my car failed emissions because of this )

If anyone has a pic that would be real helpful or even a link to a helms manual that i can download, it would be gretly appreciated.
thanks

ps: 94 gsr (the bucket, wooo!!!)

The EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. EGR serves one purpose and one purpose only. That purpose is to reduce Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx). Under normal combustion, Nitrogen(N2)Oxygen (O2) in the air and Hydrocarbons (HC) in the fuel combine into water(H2O) Carbon dioxide (CO2) and the Nitrogen remains unchanged. Under very hot combustion temperatures, the Nitrogen reacts with the other two byproducts and forms Nitrogen oxide (NO). After being released into the atmosphere, it picks up another Oxygen and becomes Nitrogen dioxide (NO2). In the presence of sunlight, it combines with other compounds like Hydrocarbons and forms Smog. Since exhaust gas is inert (very stable) it doesn’t burn again. So by being introduced into the combustion chamber, it will lower combustion chamber temps enough so that the Nitrogen doesn’t react with the other compounds and is passed unchanged out the tailpipe thus not contributing to smog. Now, since exhaust gas doesn’t burn, it doesn’t exactly help with combustion. At higher RPM’s, this really isn’t noticable, but at idle, the reintroduction of exhaust gas will cause a very rough idle and can cause stalling if to much is introduced into the combustion chamber. Too much flow will retard engine performance and cause a hesitation on acceleration. Too little flow will increase NOx and cause engine ping.

No EGR for joo. BTW, "at higher rpms it isnt noticable" is because any car manufactured after 1970 has a EGR valve that cuts the EGR off after about 2500rpms. Thus the EGR is inactive under WOT and has no effect on the engine.....minus making my intake look like it got hit up by the soot truck.

if u really have a gsr then u DONT HAVE A EGR.
the vtec acts like the egr. theres no need for an egr system in a vtec motor.
and if u think im wrong then go look for it, it should be near the intake manifold/tb.
GL buddy.

p.s. i HAVE a gsr and it's a 94 and guess what lol i have no egr.
and u call urselves mechanics? tisk tisk

And you think vtec acts like egr??? How does it act like EGR? One of those pumps exhaust gas back into my intake and the other engages a rocker and larger cam lobe. Im lost on how those are anything alike.

i have a similar problem w/ a 94 GSR.

I am failing emissions for NOx (nearly twice the threshold). I am clearly running lean. Will an o2 sensor fix this problem, or could it be something to do w/ the vtec system, or what else?
