It is hard to tell but yes it can happen especially if it is an old gasket. You can get a new one though, they shouldn't be too much $$.

Probbly and honestly, for 20 bucks or what ever the gasket runs is it worth the gamble comparing price to a new motor?

You should always replace the VC gasket when removing the VC. Get a gasket set for a 88-89 Integra. I'd also recommend a little RTV or Hondabond on it.

yes you have to replaced the valve cover gasket because the oil and heat from the motor make the gasket swell and it sucks in the oil and thats why its not re-usable. its a small price to pay for that new motor.

I've used the same gasket when replacing as valve cover 3-4 times with no leaks. Just Hondabond the corners as instructed in the Helms.
