the dry ice trick is kind of hard as you will have to pretty much flip the car upside down.

The heat gun and scraper works well. Hard work, but IMHO, works better than the dry ice.

If you can take everything out, go media blast it.

i have done it to two cars, the heat gun and scraper method works ok, but the stuff stinks really bad when it burn.

We ended up just wire wheeling it all of. It is a time consuming proccess but you gota do what you gota do

I've done this as well...be prepared to spend a full weekend removing from under the car. We weighed the mess that came off...right around 35 pounds. Not much of an improvement if you consider every 100lbs lost is worth .10/sec (atleast in the 1/4 mile)

FYI, the stock wiring in a CRX also weights about 35lbs

So if I can take off 1,600 lbs, I can do the 1/4 mile in 0 seconds flat?

I believe I took about 35 #s as well off my EK scraping all that rubber undercoating off. That was fun without flipping the car over.

i was talking to a buddy about this. he was doing it the hard way on his civic with a wire wheel. someone suggested that they make like a hot tank cleaner thats pretty big and you actually dip the car into it. it melts everything but the metal.

dont know if the guy was full of bs or not but i never really looked into it.

I'm not so sure that service is still available. At least not in CA.

Life is just as toxic as ever, people just seem to care more nowadays...

Thawley it's done now as a "solution dip" or some crap not the same stuff as an acid dip but it does the job. The Ef that you saw at L-con had that that treatment done, so it can be seam welded.

I believe if you drop the car off at L-con they return it to you bare metal clean for 1500.00 bucks or so. Hell if it's there drop it off get it dipped, seamed, caged and ready to rock.

acid dipping or media blasting is the best, and the most efficient way to remove rust, coating and paint from large, intricate body surfaces. if you are serious about making the chassis race ready, strip it, dip it, and put in on a rotisserie for media blasting, then seam weld it and repaint.
other methods could be cheaper, but IMO are more time consuming and would not be the first choice to approach the chassis clean-up.

I didn't do the whole underbody yet, but i sorta discovered this by accident while cleaning out the inner fenders one day. Some degreaser+press washer took the crap right off.

Now YMMV, cuz i think this probably works better on 15yr cars where all that crap pretty much dried out...

Wouldn't the seam welding that is necessary after acid-dipping be against the rules in a lot of classes?

There is another place in Socal that does acid dipping other than L-Con. Not sure of the name, but Rick Solis has used them.

I've taken some off in the wheel wells by accident with a pressure washer.

Has anyone noticed any rust after doing this? If so, how many wet events have you done after removing it?

I believe you take a weight hit for this.... I only recommend who I have seen do the work from start to finish and with great success. I have walked into a number of fab shops and had this happen

Me: do you do chassi strip and seam welding?

Fabbie: Of course we do.

Me: have you ever done a complete car before?

Fabbie: no but we are willing to try!
