Default DIY - Make Your Own Tools. Wheel Bearing Remove/Install *DESIGNED*

Im all about making my own tools to get the job done for cheap instead of buying them outright at a store, its just more fun.

Right now Im in a bind and would like to make a sort of wheel bearing installer/remover

I seen this on Ebay and instead of the $150 cost and waiting for shipping, Id like to spin it myself at work on the mill/lathe

I honestly dont know how it works yet, as Ive never seen where the bearing itself is even going so I can tthink of how its going to work. But I would like to duplicate this tool in order to replace the wheel bearing on my 88 Crx.

I have a bearing infront of me if the specs of that are needed. Id like to know how this tool worked first though.

I have access to any raw material Id need and can spin up whatever I need on the manual lathe at work.

Heres pics

And the Ebay links

Whatever I need to make I will make, try my best to make anyways. I dont know if the materials are hardenned or not. The threaded rod will probably be heat treted right? I dont think the threaded rod we have at work could take that kind of load but I dont know

It either pulls the bearings in or pulls them out. To install bearings I just use a piece of dowel in the right size and a mallet.

Can I take a regular piece of threaded rod, heat it up to sin and do ao homemade oil dipped heat treat?

How big should the rod be?

My bearing is 2.835" outer diameter and an inner diameter if 1.492"

So basically I get this car down and the spindle off. I make one large cup to sit on the spindle that the bearing is pulled into, will be 3" inner diamieter and 2" tall so the bearing can come all the way out. It will have a welded plate on it with a hole a bit igger than my piece of threaded rod.

I place this over the hub, pass the threaded rod through with a nut attached to it so it cant fit through the hole.

The threaded rod goes through my cup, through the old bearing where its going to connect to something that sitting right against the bearing? On the inner or outter race of the bearing? And its pulled out simply by me spinning the nut on the end of the threaded rod? Does this not damage the bearing when putting it back in or does it have to sit on a certain spot?
