Because you do not have rotors on the rear suspension... you have drums. In essence, the front calipers squeeze the pads together to stop the car... while the rears use wheel cylinders (sort of a "reverse caliper") to push apart the brake shoes.

And since you didn't know what you were looking at, I would suggest taking the car somwhere to have the rear brakes done... Changing out brake shoes can be fairly complicated, if you have never done them before.

naw it's disk all around abs brakes when I look at it it's not like the calipers in the front on how to change it. I just don't want to mess w/ abs until I know for sure how to change it.

abs doesnt have anything to do with changing the pads as far as i know. i dont see how you can do the front but not the back. it's practically the same.

If you don't do anything but change out the pads and rotors, you won't have to worry about messing with the ABS system.

The sensors are fixed, as well as all the brake lines/cables.

Just do it like you would with the fronts.

Pull the caliper from the hub, hang it by something other that it's brake hose, pull the pads out, replace with new ones.

Pull the rotor off the hub, replace it with the new one, replace the caliper... torque everything to spec, and you are set.

Just make sure you check all your caliper piston seals and brake lines and such. It is better to replace it whilst it is all torn down, than to have to redo it once you get it all back together and find that you have a leak somewhere.

When you replace rear pads, you cannot just push the piston back into the caliper like you would with the fronts - you have to turn it in like a screw. You could do it with a very large screwdriver or similar tool, or you could buy the special tool for turning rear caliper pistons with a ratchet.

ABS does not matter for a pad and rotor change.

You don't "unscrew" it, you screw it in clockwise, as if you were tightening it.

That's really the only difference from the fronts.

Make sure your e-brake is off before attempting to change the rear pads.

You are right Targa, I totally forgot about the screw in caliper pistons.

It's been about 2 years since I worked at Sears as a tech, so I forget a few things.

It looks SIMILAR to this... this is the one I have used before:

I have this one. It cost $10 and fits a variety of rear caliper pistons from different manufacturers. It fits onto a 3/8" drive ratchet (with an extension).

that will work too... mine had interchangeable heads on it as well... worked fairly well.

Haven't used it in a pretty good while, since my last 2 cars had rear drums .
