Default Questions about High-Flow Cat.

Hello all,

I am currently looking into buying a high-flow cat since the stock one crapped out on me.

The car is a 94 Prelude VTEC with the stock header and an Apexi N1 catback. 2.25 I believe.

I talked to a sponsor in the vendor forum about it and he said that the high-flow cat he sells (random tech, IIRC) will not fit, I would need to get it welded... And that I don't need one with an 02 bung. He also said that's he's not very knowledgable with Preludes. So that's why I'm here.

Since I haven't been in the Prelude forum for so long I'm completely clueless. Can anyone confirm what the vendor guy said? Or atleast steer me in the right direction?

I just need to know which high-flow cat fits directly without drilling, welding and such.

Where are the OG Prelude guys at? Help me out!

you have obd1 you will not need a bung on the cat...but if it has one just get a plug for it.

Search for a 92-96 high flow cat...and like i said...if it has a bung then plug it.

Thats an option too IF your state doesnt require emissions. Buts its bad for the environment.

I see, so will there be any fitment issue with the Apexi N1?

I need the car to pass emissions. Plus the car sounds like absolute crap right now. I don't need it to be any louder. The N1 is already loud enough with a silencer. I might even go back to the stock cat-back.

I think Dave @ SMSP sells cats with the flanges welded up for a Prelude, it might be worth checking in with him.

Yeah, I was looking at those earlier but the prices made me look elsewhere.

Here's where I bought my high flow cat. This is the one I got, but call them and ask if they sell one for a Prelude.

A muffler shop will weld on flanges for less than $20 if that helps

this is what you do, cuz ive done it all myself

get a stock replacement cat to get through emissions, i got one at autozone for 70 bucks, go through emissions and get it certified. now you are legal to drive. its better than getting a "high flow" cat because those units are very hit or miss as far as passing emissions ive personally never known anyone that has passed with one.

then go online and get a "test pipe" for your car . you can find them on ebay, kteller, and probably lots of other websites. its simply a length of pipe that is the same length as the stock cat with the same flanges. its a direct bolt-in replacement and they are made for various models including prelude. i have one myself. you shouldnt have any problems bolting it up to aftermarket header and exhaust as long as the flanges for them are the same as stock and in the same locations. i myself have a dc sports headers and apexi exhaust and had no problems fitting my test pipe in.

now you are legal to drive and no longer have the restrictions of a cat. keep the stock cat until the next time you smog the car or sell it. the only way you can get in trouble is if a cop was to actually look at your exhaust and see no cat. and if your concerned about this you could also just bore out your stock cat and it will still appear as though you have one you just no longer have any restriction.

this is what i did. i live in AZ so im not 100 percent sure of your emissions laws etc. but it shouldnt be too different its not like they smog your car everyday. usually your good for atleast a year if not more when you register.

Yeah, I knew about that. I stopped by an exhaust shop yesterday for a price quote. They wanted $225 for a high flow cat.

Funny you should mention Autozone, I was there last night and they have one for $100. I might go with that. I don't really care about the cat restriction, just to pass emissions, even though it's not that strict. I actually want a stock exhaust. lol

Thanks for the help guys. Glad to see the Prelude forum still helping people. I'll be back when I decide to slap more mods on the H22.

Speed safely all.

Stock cat ftw

There is no reason to pollute more than you have to....just get a cutout for when you wanna rip on it....

Yeah, I do enough polluting in my catless wrx. I rarely drive the Prelude, it's my wife's car. I just want it to run properly, I could careless about going fast.

Now the problem is if the current cat was welded to the N1 since I bought it from the dealer like that.

Yeah i hate when they weld the cat to the exhaust....ruins both of them

Your wife drives an n1 h22 every day??

That is impressive, I don't know many women who could deal with it, the n1 is pretty loud and raspy

You got yourself a special lady

Yeah, I gotta check the piping when I do the oil change after work.

Yup, she drives an H22 with an N1. She had no choice, she wanted an automatic four door GSR. I told her hell NO, Prelude or a minivan since I used to own a 2000 BB6 SH. Hahaha

She is special, she caught on to the 5spd with minimal problems. The N1 is loud, especially with the messed up cat. She is paranoid about cops and calls herself a ricer.

I got a magnaflow high flow cat for my 4th gen and it bolted up to my Apexi WS2 perfectly. Best part was I got the whole thing for like $80 new off of ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...d=1,1
Oh and in New Jersey we have strict emissions and it passed first time no problem.

Here I found another one that is less then what i paid for it

Thanks a lot.

So I took a look at the pipes and realized that it's not the cat the crapped out. It's the FLEX pipe. The thing is all black, puffing out white smoke, and emits the smell of raw gas. To top it all off, it looks like they welded the flex pipe end to the cat.

Now my question is, should I replace the cat also? The car just threw a code 12 (EGR Valve). Could that be caused from the flex pipe or is it the EGR itself?

I might as well go with an aftermarket header now.
