A/C question
with A/c dye you would just mix a little bit of dye in with the Refrigerant.. which you should have R-12.. and run the R12 through your system like normal and any dye you see penetrating the hoses or seals.. is a leak lol pretty self explanatory.... yes the system needs freon to use the dye... goodluck
If there is no freon in the system, you should first vacum the system, then recharge.
The dye bonds with the oil in the system.
So if all the oil has leaked out it needs to be replaced.
You can also find leaks by looking for the oil leakage around the fittings and in the pressure switch.

Forget the r12 stuff, it's illegal.. Just go to the auto store and get yourself a can of refrigerant that comes with dye in it already. Don't forget to pick up the r12 adapter. Shoot that stuff in and wait till the AC isn't cold anymore. Then look around for a leak.
And one more thing, it's illegal for the average Joe to perform AC work. You've got to be a certified technician to do so.

if your car originally came with r12 from the factory.its not illegal to put it into your car.... . and you shouldnt put 134a into an r12 system.. and yes it may be illegal to work on AC because of certain laws with handling refrigerant... but most people are not going to go pay a tech. the time and money to diagnose somethign when he could simply do it himself...

The world is supposedly working off of the existing inventory. Supplemented by grey-market R-12 from countries that didn't sign.
You need a certification to buy R-12 in small cans, but you don't need certs to buy & use R-134a.
