This is on EJ/EK, but I think the EG is the same: There's a rubber boot around the shifter underneath the console. That boot is the only thing between the cabin and the exhaust. Sometimes, especially if you've ever pulled/reinstalled the shifter, the boot can either get popped off or torn, which allows even more hot air in from the exhaust.
Take your console off and check the placement/condition of the boot. If you're getting heat in the e-brake area, it's probably leaking air from under the car.
Mine came off when I installed my short shifter, but I didn't find out why the center console was so hot until I took it apart like a year later.
