There is nothing special about a spoon ecu or a mugen ecu except for the "branding".

Get your self a chipped obd1 ecu and have your car dyno & street tuned for optimum performance/gas milage on your setup.

I use a Spoon ECU. I have a JDM engine with Spoon internals though so it only made sense. It has way more torque down low and the vtec kicks in at 4800. No real noticeable gains up top but very nice for driving around town. The vtec engagement is also a lot smoother, both in terms of power delivery and sound.

If you call up Howard at Opak Racing (Spoon distributor in the US) he'll also tell you that there's nothing wrong running a Spoon ECU. The ECU adapts to a safe map depending on what octane level you put in the tank.

Running any pre-mapped ECU will give you less power, fuel economy, and driveability than having your individual engine tuned on a dyno.

Just to add to this, I had my car test a few weeks ago and left the spoon ECU in for it, and the emission levels were lower than they were 2 years ago when i had it last tested with the stock JDM P73 ECU. High idle Co level dropped from 0.24 to 0.18% (0.3% limit) The cat is original and now almost 11 years old and the only difference between then and now was i have a new exhaust (HKS silent - v - Legalis-R)...but i dont think that would have made a big difference.

buy a vafc and tune your own ecu......just cause it is a spoon doesn't make it the best.

I don't recall anybody saying it was the best...but anyway.

V-AFC is great if you have access to a dyno but it still doesn't allow you to increase the rev limit nor play with timing.

We got away with doing some timed runs and were pleasantly surprised that we were only down 4-5whp with no dyno (when we finally get the setup properly tuned)

Still, I recall the timed run process taking quite a bit of trial and error and there were a lot of fluctuations in testing, car weight due to gas (minimal) to shifting points etc...towards the end...we were just tired and settled....
