Default B16A2....how much are you burning?

I used to add about 1 qt every 5k miles due to VTEC..........now I "drive" my car more and use VTEC daily and I get about 1,500 miles before adding about 1qt of oil. Using Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic..........@ $5+ per qt this is getting old fast.

Car has almost 106k miles on it (99SI).......no leaks, no nothing.........why does VTEC burn so much oil? How much oil are ya'll go'n through?

I have had my swap for about 50k now, and don't burn a drop. And I hit vtec at least once per drive, just to make sure he still works.

106,000 miles and burning oil, you are positive you are not leaking oil?????

well if you are not leaking oil due to a seal, then you are burning oil because 1)you have bad valves or 2)you have bad piston rings

im willing to bet any sum of money that your engine is NOT burning oil because you are hitting VTEC. that is just not right, an engine should not burn any oil because of VTEC, at least it should not burn 1.5 qts every couple thousand miles.

anyways, good luck finding out your prob and fixin it so you dont have to keep buying oil, maybe someone else can add if i have forgotten anything.

car is in storage......i'll have enough money in the spring to replace the HG. It leaks where the oil flows down from the head to the block. Leaks out, no in where the coolant is. Its been like this for 30k miles, ever since i got it. But yea, its on my To-do list before the car goes back on the road along with a timing belt.

Luckily the only place where my oil leaks is the oil drain plug. It seems like it only does it sometimes though. Some oil changes it does, others it doesn't. And I get my filters from the dealer, too. Speaking of, I need to replace my timing belt, as there is a rib that is worn.

im curious, how is it that Shane hits vtec regularly and does not burn oil. yet everyone else burns at least 1 qt. between changes

to me, an engine should not burn oil at all (maybe a very small amt. due to heat), but then again i don't mess with B series, only D for me. Personally if my engine was burning oil (not leaking) i would assume that i had bad valves or bad piston rings

how often do you guys change your oil??????

I wouldn't think VTEC should have anything to do with it.

I never said that I hit vtec regularly. Once per drive to work is about it. I change my oil once every 2500 miles with Mobil Sytec blend and use no less that 92 octane. I know it is not necessary, but I do it just to be cautious.

You wouldn't think so, but I have read in a number of places that because of various reasons, hitting vtec on a more than regular basis can burn excess oil. Maybe Bense or someone with more engine experience can chime in, but I have read this more than once.

there is your problem. switch oil brands. mobil1 burns like water. i run regular run of the mill quaker state dino 5-30. almost 200k on my 99 si, and it doesn't burn a drop.....

in my race car, i used to run mobil1 but i burned through a quart+ every event, which was way too much. i now run Agip synthetic 10w60, and no more problems.

Thicker oil? 10w30 If that doesn't work, valves/rings, sorry.

If your car is running 5w30 synthetic, is it ok to switch back to regular conventional 5w30?

To me the oil consumption is due to what someone stated earlier..

- bad rings (possible land damage as well)

A good friend of mine has a 2000 Si and his car was burning about the same (maybe a little more) than you in the same amount of miles.

Well.. come to find we pulled the head and the rings were burn up pretty bad and the lands were crumbling. He was 100k as well.

Does smoke billow out at higher rpms?

Rumor is NO. Someone feel free to refute but I've been told once you've gone synthetic with a couple oil cycles... don't go back. What does H-T think?
