Default Timing MArk Not visible... HELPPPPPP

I was trying to correct my ignition timing, Honda Service manual states Red Mark should be aligned in pointer(located in the crank pulley cover) in Neutral(Manual Transmission). The problem is... the RED marking is not visible anymore to make it align, although, the white marking is the only visible which is the TDC marking.. any other way? any other markings is should look for? Please help... Thanks in advance...

I have.. Honda Civic 1997 LX; D16Y7 Engine; Manual Transmission

You can use the TDC mark if you get an adjustable timing light.
Or you can look for the other marks should be a little over an inch away from the tdc mark. I use white-out to remark it.

Do you think its ok even if the Honda service manual says to align it to the red instead? I'm really a newbie, Honda dealers are expensive...
I tried to use that existing TDC mark(white), but the engine sputters and the engine almost die.

You can only use the TDC mark if you have an adjustable timing light. You would have to set your timing light to the desired timing (e.g., 16 degrees BTDC), and then adjust the timing until the marks lined up. If your timing light isn't adjustable, you need to use the actual timing marks not the TDC one.

they are engraved into the crank pulley.

when watching the light shine with #1 cylinder...you will see 3 marks(indendeted into the pulley)....line it up with the middle one
